The theological assumption undergirding this project asserts that the church is to play a significant role in the community where it unfolds its ministry. My assumption is that the church is called to serve as a primary force in developing communities in the inner city. Community development is a concrete way in which the church can witness and proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God. The author focuses on educational religious institutions because they serve as the pedagogical arm by which the church embodies the gospel of Christ. This thesis researches the importance of practical training for both lay and clergy persons interested in community development. The thesis is based on the New Testament concept of community as exemplified in the church of the first century as well as the ministry of jesus and his disciples. This project suggests that by bringing awareness, developing a sound curriculum, promoting and involving community organizers, change can occur. The objectives point to a manner in which the church through educational institution (SCUPE), can provide a formal academic yet practical program geared to enhancing the work and development of leadership in the urban setting. This program will train persons in community development who will work and unfold the ministry of the church in their respective communities while at the same time work toward an academic degree at North Park Seminary. The proposed interventions include a process leading to changing the existent issues in urban ministry, particularly in community development. The interventions address issues of awareness, development of a curriculum, accreditation, and the development of an advisory committee to provide concrete feedback and guidance to the program. The objectives and interventions point to ways in which this project has become a reality in the past year. Finally, the thesis is grounded and inspired in the realities the author has experienced in both ministry as well as living in the city of Chicago.
