Paul Baker and the Integration of Abilities

"Irritating, arrogant, nuts--and a genius." That's what Charles Laughton said of Paul Baker. He also said, "Paul Baker is one of the most important minds in the world theater today. He seems to have invented new ways of doing things, and I think something big will come out of it." Something big did come out of it. Stage productions such as Othello, Hamlet, and A Cloud of Witnesses brought critics including Henry Hewes of Saturday Review and photographers such as Eliot Eliosofon of Life magazine to Baylor Theater in Waco. Baker's production of Eugene McKinney's A Different Drummer received an invitation from CBS TV's cultural program, Omnibus, to present the play live from their New York studio. Baker's production of As I Lay Dying, Robert Flynn's adaptation of William Faulkner's novel, brought an invitation to present the play at the Theater of Nations in Paris, the first non-Broadway production to compete there, where it won a Special Jury Award. That was Paul Baker the theater director. Equally important was Baker's role as teacher and mentor in the arts. Architect Arthur Rogers stated, "No single person has contributed more to (theater architecture) development than Paul Baker." Baker's architectural visions at Baylor Theater, the Dallas Theater Center, and Trinity University's Ruth Taylor Theater have inspired similar constructions not only in the United States but in places such as Manila and Seoul. Baker's teaching philosophy, based on his famous class "The Integration of Abilities," has been inspirational. In education Baker has been founder, mentor, or director of children's theaters where children are the creators of the drama; of the Booker T. Washington School of the Arts; of the Learning About Learning Foundation, a retail line of interactive kits that included books and toys; and dozens of creative programs for children, parents, and educators. In Paul Baker and the Integration of Abilities, Baker tells how a summer in Paris gave him a new way of looking at theater. Eugene McKinney describes Baker's development of writers, and Glenn Allen Smith demonstrates the use of the elements in creating a play. In other chapters on acting, directing, speech, and design, Baker's ideas gave roots and wings to his students and colleagues. Despite invitations from theaters in other places, including Austria, Germany, Yugoslavia, and New Zealand, and offers of positions at other universities, Baker chose to remain in Texas where he was born and where he lives today.







The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education

In the United States, broad study in an array of different disciplines â€"arts, humanities, science, mathematics, engineeringâ€" as well as an in-depth study within a special area of interest, have been defining characteristics of a higher education. But over time, in-depth study in a major discipline has come to dominate the curricula at many institutions. This evolution of the curriculum has been driven, in part, by increasing specialization in the academic disciplines. There is little doubt that disciplinary specialization has helped produce many of the achievement of the past century. Researchers in all academic disciplines have been able to delve more deeply into their areas of expertise, grappling with ever more specialized and fundamental problems. Yet today, many leaders, scholars, parents, and students are asking whether higher education has moved too far from its integrative tradition towards an approach heavily rooted in disciplinary "silos". These "silos" represent what many see as an artificial separation of academic disciplines. This study reflects a growing concern that the approach to higher education that favors disciplinary specialization is poorly calibrated to the challenges and opportunities of our time. The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education examines the evidence behind the assertion that educational programs that mutually integrate learning experiences in the humanities and arts with science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) lead to improved educational and career outcomes for undergraduate and graduate students. Abilities, Motivation and Methodology


Book Description

Diverse developments in ability and motivation research, and in the derivations of new methodological techniques have often run on parallel courses. The editors of this volume felt that communication across domains could be vastly improved through intensive interaction between researchers. This interaction was realized in The Minnesota Symposium on Learning and Individual Differences, which directly addressed ability, motivation and methodology concerns. This book, compiled as a result of the Symposium, unites theoretical and empirical advances in learning and individual differences. The resulting volume, divided in five parts, encompasses not only prepared papers that were presented at the symposium, but compiled and edited transcriptions of the spontaneous discussions that took place at the symposium. Part I provides an orientation to the treatment of learning and individual differences from three major perspectives: experimental psychology, motivational psychology, and differential/ methodological psychology. Part II continues and expands the discussion of quantitative methodology and applications to learning and individual differences. Part III is devoted primarily to developments in the cognitive ability domain, while Part IV addresses the impact of non-cognitive, personal constructs on learning and performance. The volume concludes with Part V which contains chapters from the closing session of the conference.

Flanders experienced large inflows of immigrants over the past decade, coming from an increasingly diverse range of countries, with growth rates outpacing the Netherlands, France and Germany, as well as Belgium as a whole. While integration outcomes have improved in recent years, some of the core indicators remain unfavourable in international comparison, especially for non-EU immigrant women, refugees, and youth with migrant parents.




Visual Selective Attention and Integration Abilities in Normal Children and Children with Early Focal Brain Injury

This dissertation aims to specify patterns of visual-spatial processing following lateralized pre- or perinatal brain injury and during normal development. Previous work with young children and adults has shown that damage to the left hemisphere (LHD) leads to deficits in visual segmentation and damage to the right hemisphere (RHD) leads to deficits in visual integration. Study 1 assessed whether this characteristic pattern of deficit persists in a school-aged population of children who sustained pre- or perinatal LHD and RHD. Two response-time tasks tested the spatial processing abilities known to be affected by lateralized brain injury. In the selective attention task, subjects responded to the direction of a single item while ignoring a distractor. In the integration task, subjects judged the similarity of two items. Contrary to an anticipated double dissociation, children with lateralized brain injury demonstrated impairments on both the selective attention and integration tasks. An analysis of each groups' performance suggested that the underlying nature of their deficits on the two tasks was quite different. Consistent with previous reports of lateralized spatial deficits in young children and adults, the impaired performance in school-aged children with LHD was attributed to pervasive deficits in visual segmentation, and the impaired performance in school-aged children with RHD was attributed to pervasive deficits in visual integration. Study 2 examined the effects of processing demands on attention in a cross-sectional sample of neurologically normal subjects. This study also represented an attempt to simulate a LHD and RHD profile of spatial performance in normal subjects. Subjects participated in a variation of the selective attention and integration tasks, where the orientation of the presented stimuli was manipulated in order to increase or decrease the processing demands of the task. The results of the complexity manipulation suggested that under specified conditions, the attentional abilities of normal subjects could be altered. However, Study 2 failed to simulate a brain injured profile of performance. Taken together, these studies contribute to the further understanding of visual spatial attention in neurologically atypical and typical populations.

Integrating the Human Sciences

What if we recognized that the human sciences collectively investigate a few dozen key phenomena that interact with each other? Can we imagine a human science that would seek to stitch its understandings of this system of phenomena into a coherent whole? If so, what would that look like? This book argues that we are unlikely to develop one unified "theory of everything." Our collective understanding must then be a "map" of the myriad relationships within this large – but finite and manageable – system, coupled with detailed understandings of each causal link and of important subsystems. The book outlines such a map and shows that the pursuit of coherence – and a more successful human science enterprise – requires integration, recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of different methods and theory types, and the pursuit of terminological and presentational clarity. It explores how these inter-connected goals can be achieved in research, teaching, library classification, public policy, and university administration.
