The author, Dr Eunice Okorocha, completed her PhD research at the Department of Educational Studies of Surrey University, England. She is the author of: Supervising International Research Students (SRHE 1997 and 2007), Crossing Cultures (Transfiguration Press 2004), Cultural Issues in Working with International Students (Abramis Academic Publishing, UK 2010), Counselling International Students (Abramis 2010) and International Students' Experience in UK Higher Education (Abramis 2010). Working with International Students in Higher Education is a research based summary of the views of academic and non academic staff that work with International Students. Amongst those interviewed were academic staff including Personal Tutors and Supervisors, accommodation staff, Chaplains, English language staff, Library staff, International Students Officers, Welfare Officers, and a Student Union Officer. The staff interviewed all identified the academic, cultural, social, religious, language and communication difficulties faced by International Students as well as exposing issues that create barriers in working with them.Based on the experiences of those interviewed, the author makes recommendations to Higher education Staff, especially to Personal Tutors, Supervisors, Heads of Departments and Institutional Management. These recommendations are made with a view to providing a better understanding of what is involved in working with Students from other cultures and academic systems, and are aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the staff that work with them.

Students, Staff and Academic Mobility in Higher Education

Academic mobility in higher education is an old phenomenon, but it has become a high profile issue as the numbers of students and staff engaged, and the number of countries involved, has increased hugely in the last few decades. For this reason and many others – political, cultural and educational – this book reports research on the many facets of the experience and people involved, both now and in the past. The emphasis in research has so far tended to focus on contemporary student mobility but this collection deliberately includes articles on mobile staff, because the question of mobility is a matter for universities and higher education in its entirety and not just a matter of bringing new students into existing and unchanging lectures, laboratories and seminars. Despite the fact that universities are and have been international institutions in their composition from the beginning, universities became in the 19th and 20th century de facto national institutions. This has changed and continues to change in the 21st century, for many reasons, but often financial, as universities seek to enhance their budgets in a globalised economy, and students seek to enhance their employment chances by acquiring qualifications with a difference. However, even if the starting point is financial, nonetheless the chapters in this book demonstrate that the effects of mobility are much more far-reaching. The effects are on host universities, on the university community of staff and students, on the ways in which staff and students understand the nature of university study, on the ways students may or may not integrate with a local community. By experiencing something different—for institutions, an influx of students with different ideas about academic study, for students an interaction with ‘locals’ and with other ‘internationals’, for staff a challenge to their assumptions about teaching and learning—all see themselves in a new light and are often forced to change. This book charts the changes which are happening now and will undoubtedly continue for the foreseeable future. It therefore offers all involved a reflection on their own experience and practice and the means of improving them.




Internationalization and the Academic Profession

This book makes a major contribution to the scholarship on internationalization in higher education by focusing on the perceptions and experiences of the academic profession in a comparative perspective. Drawing from data collected by the Academic Professions in the Knowledge-based Society (APIKS) project, the contributors to this volume are uniquely positioned to explore the impact and implications of internationalization on those who play the central role in the teaching and research functions of higher education: the professoriate. The core chapters address issues such as the roles of gender, discipline, and career stage in the international activities of academics in different countries, national differences in the perceptions and behaviors of university faculty in the internationalization of teaching, and of research within higher education systems on the perceptions and behaviors of academics. Each of these chapters draw on the existing research literature in these thematic areas as a foundation for the systematic analysis of the international APIKS dataset to illuminate and discuss key findings. This book offers a highly original and unique contribution to the study of internationalization in higher education because its editors and contributors, as participants in the APIKS project, have been able to raise and address key research questions using comparative international empirical data on the academic profession that has never before been available. Given the tremendous importance of internationalization and the global dimension of higher education, this volume offers unique, distinctive insights on the implications of internationalization for the academic profession and the very different ways in which these transformations are understood by academics both within and between systems.
