"New" Exoticisms


Book Description

All civilisations have both feared and been fascinated by what lies beyond their limits, and have to a greater or lesser extent construed their “others” as exotics. Given that, even in its most consumerist fashion, the adoption of the exotic goes back a long way, what, then —if anything— is new in contemporary versions of exoticism? This volume attempts to offer some answers to this question. The first of its three sections serves as an extended introduction to the concept and practice of exoticism, considering the phenomenon from a number of theoretical and critical positions, explicitly examining —sometimes via significant examples— the particular attributes of exoticism. The second and third sections are more strictly text-based, relying on the analysis of specific instances of film in the former and literature in the latter, in order to tease out some specific uses of the exotic –whether ethnic, gendered, sexual or other. This volume will be of interest to scholars and students working in the fields of representation, cultural theory, postcolonialism, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, cinema and literature.




Intertextual Exoticism


Book Description

Intertextual Exoticism reads a body of non-canonical German exoticist literature published after imperial Germany's loss of colonial Oceania in 1914, applying theories of "intertextuality" (Kristeva) and recent scholarship on literary exoticism to explore Germany's postwar crises of psychology, masculinity, and national identity mapped onto Oceanic spaces. Many readers are familiar with late Victorian texts expressing imperial Britain's anxieties. Richard Sperber expands the scope of these texts in the context of a post-imperial Europe, examining how German exoticist literature, published after German colonial loss in Oceania in 1914, intensifies the gothic themes and subjectivities of these Victorian texts. The first part of this study examines eight adventure narratives of Oceania, demonstrating how they do not necessarily present or represent a single, unified German colonial project. They take place on islands owned by Australia and Britain, and the unprepared German protagonists-amateur naturalists and bungling traders-are compared unfavourably to resolute Anglophone adventurers. The second part then pairs five well-known exoticist texts, including Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Stevenson's The Beach of Falesá, Haggard's She, Hitchens' The Garden of Allah, and Wilde's Salomé, with five non-canonical exoticist German texts. Sperber shows through these pairings how German literary exoticism becomes a transnational and intertextual literature that rereads dominant themes in 20th-century Europe's greater literatures of exoticism and colonial loss.




Exoticism in Salammbô

Imperial Babel

Translation suffers a poor reputation: traditionally dismissed as a derivative, invisible process, its recent critical emergence has led to its being cast as a central tool of colonial oppression. In Imperial Babel, Padma Rangarajan challenges both these arguments by revealing translation's complex role in shaping nineteenth-century literary and political relationships between India and Britain. Drawing from a wide range of texts ranging from eighteenth-century oriental tales to mystic poetry of the fin de siècle, Rangarajan examines literal enterprises of translation as well its ethnological, mythographic, and religious variants to show how translation in the empire steps out of the shadows and allows us to consider its diverse political and cultural consequences. Merging ongoing interests in complicating colonial epistemologies with new theoretical shifts of Translation Studies, Rangarajan argues that colonial translation was not merely a monovocal instrument of oppression, but a process that changed both colonizer and colonized, and undermined colonial hegemony as much as it abetted it. Searching for translation's trace enables both a broader, more complex understanding of the work of translation in imperial culture as well as a more nuanced understanding of the dialectical relationship between colonial policy and nineteenth-century fiction. Imperial Babel uses translation's persistent presence in colonial literature to reconsider the history of orientalism and its relationship to nineteenth-century British culture. Rangarajan argues that while bearing witness to the violence that underwrites translation in colonial spaces, we should also remain open to the irresolution of translation, its unfixed nature, and its ability to transform the colonizer as well as the colonized, the translated language and the translator's language. Imperial Babel will be of value to students and scholars of nineteenth-century British literature, South Asia, and translation.

Whereas cross-cultural exchange has typically been understood through the lens of male-centered translation work, this study, which is grounded in the relations between the west and Byzantium, examines cross-cultural marriage as a medium of literary and cultural exchange, one in which women's work was equally important as men’s. When the Hungarian composer Gy?rgy Ligeti passed away in June 2006, he was widely feted as being one of the greatest composers of our time. His complete published works were recorded during his lifetime and his music continues to inspire a steady stream of performances and scholarship. Ligeti's Laments provides a critical analysis of the composer's works, considering both the compositions themselves and the larger cultural implications of their reception. Bauer both synthesizes and challenges the prevailing narratives surrounding the composer's long career and uses the theme of lament to inform a discussion of specific musical topics, including descending melodic motives, passacaglia and the influence of folk music. But Ligeti 'laments' in a larger sense; his music fuses rigour and sensuality, tradition and the new and influences from disparate high and low cultures, with a certain critical and ironic distance, reflected in his spoken commentary as well as in the substance of his music. The notions of nostalgia, exoticism and the absolute are used to relate works of different eras and genres, along with associated concepts of allegory, melancholy, contemporary subjectivity and the voice.
