Investigating Sedimentary Rocks

Book Description

Sedimentary rocks are like time capsules. Each layer contains clues about what life was like at the time the layers were formed. Readers will uncover the fascinating science behind rock formation through text that’s both informative and engaging. Helpful diagrams and charts reinforce the concepts covered in the text, while allowing readers to visualize concepts they encounter in STEM learning. A glossary, index, and reference websites encourage readers to seek out additional information on their own, using the detective skills learned in this book to explore the world around them.

Investigating the Rock Cycle

Book Description

Audisee® eBooks with Audio combine professional narration and text highlighting for an engaging read aloud experience! Igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks make up the three main types of rocks. But did you know that rocks are constantly being created, destroyed, and created again? Or that rocks are changed by weather, erosion, heat, and pressure? See the rock cycle in action in this fascinating book.

Sedimentary Rocks in the Field

Book Description

Sedimentary rocks are widely distributed at the Earth's surface & their accurate description is essential for the interpretation of depositional environments & palaeo-geography. This book describes how these rocks may be observed, recorded & mapped.

Physical Geology

Book Description

This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Sedimentary Petrology

Book Description

The earlier editions of this book have been used by successivegenerations of students for more than 20 years, and it is thestandard text on the subject in most British universities and manyothers throughout the world. The study of sediments and sedimentary rocks continues to be acore topic in the Earth Sciences and this book aims to provide aconcise account of their composition, mineralogy, textures, structures, diagenesis and depositional environments. This latest edition is noteworthy for the inclusion of 16 plateswith 54 colour photomicrographs of sedimentary rocks inthin-section. These bring sediments to life and show their beautyand colorful appearance down the microscope; they will aid thestudent enormously in laboratory petrographic work. The text hasbeen revised where necessary and the reference and further readinglists brought up-to-date. New tables have been included to helpundergraduates with rock and thin-section description andinterpretation. New 16-page colour section will mean students do not need tobuy Longman Atlas All illustrations redrawn to higher standard Complete revision of text - new material on sedimentarygeochemistry, etc

Petrology of Sedimentary Rocks

Book Description

Advanced textbook outlining the physical, chemical, and biological properties of sedimentary rocks through petrographic microscopy, geochemical techniques, and field study.

Investigating Rocks

Book Description

Introduces rocks, discussing the different types of rocks, where they are found, the changes they undergo, and how weathering and erosion occur.

Sedimentology: A Study of Sedimentary Rocks and Structures

Book Description

Sedimentology studies the formation of sand, clay and silt. There are mainly four types of sedimentary rocks-clastic rocks, evaporites, chemical sedimentary rocks and carbonates. Sedimentary rocks provide incredible insights into the geologic history of the Earth. Most of the topics introduced in this book cover new techniques and the applications of sedimentology. It strives to provide a fair idea about this discipline and to help develop a better understanding of the latest advances within this field. This book will help new researchers by foregrounding their knowledge in this branch.

Application of Cathodoluminescence Imaging to the Study of Sedimentary Rocks

Book Description

Minerals in sedimentary rocks emit characteristic visible luminescence called cathodoluminescence (CL) when bombarded by high energy electrons. CL emissions can be displayed as colour images in a cathodoluminescence microscope or as high-resolution monochromatic images in a scanning electron microscope. This provides information not available by other techniques on the provenance of the mineral grains in sedimentary rocks, and insights into diagenetic changes. The book, first published in 2006, begins with an easily understood presentation of the fundamental principles of CL imaging. This is followed by a description and discussion of the instruments used in CL imaging, and a detailed account of its applications to the study of sedimentary rocks. The volume is a comprehensive, easily understood description of the applications of cathodoluminescence imaging to the study of sedimentary rocks. It will be an important resource for academic researchers, industry professionals and advanced graduate students in sedimentary geology.
