What It's Like to Be a Dog

Book Description

"Dog lovers and neuroscientists should both read this important book." -- Dr. Temple Grandin What is it like to be a dog? A bat? Or a dolphin? To find out, neuroscientist and bestselling author Gregory Berns and his team did something nobody had ever attempted: they trained dogs to go into an MRI scanner -- completely awake -- so they could figure out what they think and feel. And dogs were just the beginning. In What It's Like to Be a Dog, Berns takes us into the minds of wild animals: sea lions who can learn to dance, dolphins who can see with sound, and even the now extinct Tasmanian tiger. Berns's latest scientific breakthroughs prove definitively that animals have feelings very much like we do -- a revelation that forces us to reconsider how we think about and treat animals. Written with insight, empathy, and humor, What It's Like to Be a Dog is the new manifesto for animal liberation of the twenty-first century.

Everything for a Dog

Book Description

In this companion to her acclaimed 2005 novel, A Dog's Life, Ann M. Martin tells the parallel stories of a stray dog (the brother of the dog featured in A Dog's Life), a boy dealing with unspeakable loss, and a boy whose most ardent wish is to own a dog—and everything for a dog. Bone and his sister, Squirrel, are stray dogs born in a shed. Left motherless as puppies, the two dogs survive together for a while, but are soon wrenched apart. Bone doesn't know if his sister is still alive, and must now go on, alone. Charlie is a boy who has suffered a terrible loss. And, as he's healing with the help of his dog, another tragedy occurs. Henry's best friend has moved away. All Henry has wanted is a dog of his own. But his parents won't let him. Bone, Charlie, and Henry live very different lives, but they are fated to intersect in surprising ways. Award-winning author Ann M. Martin has written a powerful, heartfelt novel that's perfect for anyone who has ever longed for a dog, or loved one.

It's All About Dogs

Book Description

This book is a complication of facts and stories, history and science, pictures, Quotations, and comments by the compiler made about that marvelous creature - the dog. In the world, there are two kinds of people, Cat People, and Dog People. I don't include those who like dogs and cats and cars, they are indecisive, and those who don't like cats or dogs aren't human. The terms "dog people" and "cat people" refer to a person's domesticated animal preference. Some people base a significant portion of their identity around their affinity for either cats or dogs, describing themselves as a "cat person" or a "dog person." (ABC News. "Dog People vs. Cat People: What Pet Preference Says About You.") I do not consider myself the book's author. Instead, I compiled information on all aspects of dogs' lives, melding them into a single-source all about dogs. My contributions to the data are my comments, explanations, and opinions expressed in italics. Wendy tells the stories of our three bels. My original goal in preparing this project was to compile a reasonably exhaustive account of dogs for my family and friends. However, I hope that others will find the presentation interesting, entertaining, and educational. I make no claims that this is a so-called scholarly project. I give credit to those whose work I share but do not describe it as a research project. I have chosen the information to be shared, how it is presented. Without apology, others might believe that something is missing. I would be surprised if that wasn't true. There is so much to share about the beautiful animal, the dog. The project is inspired by my love of dogs - in particular, our family dogs.

It All Started with a Dog

Book Description

“It’s been an honour and privilege to have looked after so many dogs and been introduced to their owners. The warm feeling of pleasure when a dog greets us or pulls their owner inside the house is priceless. At times I’ve felt like I should be paying the owners because of the joy and interest their pets give us.” When Graham Matthews began walking Nero, a trainee guide dog, he had no idea how life-changing this seemingly simple job would be. Once Nero passed on to his advanced training, the hole he left behind in Graham’s life was immense, and so Graham became a dog carer, offering a home from home to a wide range of canines – from rumbustious rescue dogs to languid labradors. “When Nero left for his advance training, I was so upset that I never took on another guide dog. When you’ve been up all night with the dog throwing up at both ends, cleaning up and lying on the floor, saying, Daddy wishes he could do it for you, well that’s not a dog, but a family member. Nero’s legacy lasted long after he had gone and it was an experience I wouldn’t have missed for the world.” It all Started with a Dog is a simple tale of dog walking experiences which are both funny and sad. Aimed at all dog lovers, it conveys the love and affection that passes between man and dog and shows that a dog really is a man’s best friend.

Unconditional Love

Book Description

Dr. Laramy has spent over 40 years in the parish ministry before retiring. Upon looking back at his schooling: B.A. degree in psychology: M.Div. degree from seminary, majoring in psychology; DMln degree in psychology and pastoral counseling) he feels that he has learned as much about God's Unconditional Love through the seven dogs he and his wife have owned as in all of his schooling and experiences. Dr. Laramy believes there is nowhere that God's Unconditional Love is expressed more than through God's reflection in a dog. Like Jesus' short life on earth showed us the way to live our lives, a dog's short life continues that message for us. Dr. Laramy is appalled by the amount of cruelty that we as human beings bestow upon these wonderful and amazing animals, and it is criminal that over 9000 dogs are euthanized every day in Humane Society centers in the United States. He is hopeful that through the reading of this book people will begin to look at dogs in a different light and mindset. This book is what it's all about.
