Jewel in the Rough

Book Description

Sometimes things happen for a reason. Sometimes it's just Benny. Benny witnesses a brutal murder that forces him to run as far as he can as fast as he can. A friend offers him a place to hide, in exchange for helping her brother with the family farm. Does it matter if the closest Benny has ever been to a farm is the petting zoo? Ex-LA cop Teagan hates farming but it's that or disappoint the only family he has left. Instead of catching criminals, his days are now spent being harassed by his sister and bullied by the Indignant Gurls—the dairy cows who will make him or break him. Jewel in the Rough plays out on Piedras Island, where the Veiled Intentions and West Coast Forensics series are also set. While characters from my other books are mentioned Jewel in the Rough is a complete standalone. Previously available in the YBBB 2022 giveaway.

Jewel in the Rough

Book Description

There's something about jewels. We admire them, covet them, pursue them, protect them, and sometimes kill for them. And such is the setting for Jewel in the Rough. But Pierre doesn't know or suspect any of this, when he flees from an abusive father and gets drawn into a web of intrigue and fugitive flight. His adventures take him all over the country while he's running from faceless enemies of his imagination and in pursuit of one very real nemesis. Along the way he is welcomed by some strangers and set up to take the fall by others. And Pierre encounters several glimpses of God's hand at work on his behalf. He learns about integrity and character, and he learns about the depravity of his own rebel heart. But God sees a jewel in Pierre and turns all his calamity into a celebration of love. Pierre isn't running anymore. This book isn't a sequel, but those of you who've read Mabel's Eyes may recognize a few characters in this book: Jayrob Lark, Ryan Temple, and, of course, Pierre, who was a pivotal contributor to that storyline, but was never named. This book will make you laugh at Pierre's predicament at times and then grieve for his hurting heart's desire to actually do the right thing at other times. It's a refreshing look at man's hopeless attempts to play hide-and-seek with God's bigger purpose for his life.

Jewel in the Rough

Book Description

It was late November, and the pecans are about to fall from their secured places on the branches. The days are rushing into the night. And the first chilling cold has set in the core of our bones. But as the dates pass and the night came, there was a static entity that never changes. This melancholy spirit is as stable as the moon which inhabits the sky. The spirited lady being described is the historian of her generation. This book is about her childhood which molded her in to a great lady. Her walk had the spring of an Olympic track star and the sparkle in her eyes had the look of a polish diamond. This remarkable lady has weathered the storms of life unlike many other people of her time. This wonderful soul was born in the year of 1904. Deep in the woods of Palestine Texas, where trees are always green and the fresh small of pine aroma dances in the pouches of the nose. The saying that Mrs. Rolla always muttered was "HOW DID WE DO IT"

The Cartiers

Book Description

“A dynamic group biography studded with design history and high-society dash . . . [This] elegantly wrought narrative bears the Cartier hallmark.”—The Economist The “astounding” (André Leon Talley) story of the family behind the Cartier empire and the three brothers who turned their grandfather’s humble Parisian jewelry store into a global luxury icon—as told by a great-granddaughter with exclusive access to long-lost family archives “Ms. Cartier Brickell has done her grandfather proud.”—The Wall Street Journal The Cartiers is the revealing tale of a jewelry dynasty—four generations, from revolutionary France to the 1970s. At its heart are the three Cartier brothers whose motto was “Never copy, only create” and who made their family firm internationally famous in the early days of the twentieth century, thanks to their unique and complementary talents: Louis, the visionary designer who created the first men’s wristwatch to help an aviator friend tell the time without taking his hands off the controls of his flying machine; Pierre, the master dealmaker who bought the New York headquarters on Fifth Avenue for a double-stranded natural pearl necklace; and Jacques, the globe-trotting gemstone expert whose travels to India gave Cartier access to the world’s best rubies, emeralds, and sapphires, inspiring the celebrated Tutti Frutti jewelry. Francesca Cartier Brickell, whose great-grandfather was the youngest of the brothers, has traveled the world researching her family’s history, tracking down those connected with her ancestors and discovering long-lost pieces of the puzzle along the way. Now she reveals never-before-told dramas, romances, intrigues, betrayals, and more. The Cartiers also offers a behind-the-scenes look at the firm’s most iconic jewelry—the notoriously cursed Hope Diamond, the Romanov emeralds, the classic panther pieces—and the long line of stars from the worlds of fashion, film, and royalty who wore them, from Indian maharajas and Russian grand duchesses to Wallis Simpson, Coco Chanel, and Elizabeth Taylor. Published in the two-hundredth anniversary year of the birth of the dynasty’s founder, Louis-François Cartier, this book is a magnificent, definitive, epic social history shown through the deeply personal lens of one legendary family.
