In late February and early March of 1836, the Mexican Army under the command of General Antonio López de Santa Anna besieged a small force of Anglo and Tejano rebels at a mission known as the Alamo. The defenders of the Alamo were in an impossible situation. They knew very little of the events taking place outside the mission walls. They did not have much of an understanding of Santa Anna or of his government in Mexico City. They sent out contradictory messages, they received contradictory communications, they moved blindly and planned in the dark. And in the dark early morning of March 6, they died. In that brief, confusing, and deadly encounter, one of America's most potent symbols was born. The story of the last stand at the Alamo grew from a Texas rallying cry, to a national slogan, to a phenomenon of popular culture and presidential politics. Yet it has been a hotly contested symbol from the first. Questions remain about what really happened: Did William Travis really draw a line in the sand? Did Davy Crockett die fighting, surrounded by the bodies of two dozen of the enemy? And what of the participants' motives and purposes? Were the Texans justified in their rebellion? Were they sincere patriots making a last stand for freedom and liberty, or were they a ragtag collection of greedy men-on-the-make, washed-up politicians, and backwoods bullies, Americans bent on extending American slavery into a foreign land? The full story of the Alamo -- from the weeks and months that led up to the fateful encounter to the movies and speeches that continue to remember it today -- is a quintessential story of America's past and a fascinating window into our collective memory. In A Line in the Sand, acclaimed historians Randy Roberts and James Olson use a wealth of archival sources, including the diary of José Enrique de la Peña, along with important and little-used Mexican documents, to retell the story of the Alamo for a new generation of Americans. They explain what happened from the perspective of all parties, not just Anglo and Mexican soldiers, but also Tejano allies and bystanders. They delve anew into the mysteries of Crockett's final hours and Travis's famous rhetoric. Finally, they show how preservationists, television and movie producers, historians, and politicians have become the Alamo's major interpreters. Walt Disney, John Wayne, and scores of journalists and cultural critics have used the Alamo to contest the very meaning of America, and thereby helped us all to "remember the Alamo."

This ground-breaking volume invites the reader into the elegant Seattle home of influential collectors Barney A. and Pam Ebsworth, who own one of the most important private collections of modern American art. The house was designed specifically for the collection, which includes seminal paintings and sculptures by Hopper, de Kooning, Pollock, O'Keefe, Johns, Hockney and Calder, among many others. Art + Architecture is one of the first examinations ever of how a top-flight collector works with an architecture firm-in this case, Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen-which understands the alchemy that allows a great work of art to exist independently in a room, and still allow the residents to live life around it. This gorgeous book includes photos of the art in the home and also beautiful color reproductions of each piece. With commentary by Franklin Kelly, curator of British and American art at the National Gallery. A must for both architecture and art aficionados.

Sergei Yesenin was a Russian poet who, in 1925, hanged himself after writing his farewell poem in blood. Jim Harrison's "correspondence" with Yesenin is an American masterwork. In the early 1970s, Harrison was living in poverty on a hard-scrabble farm, suffering from depression and suicidal urges. He began to write daily prose-poem letters to Yesenin, confiding to his unlikely friend about sex, drunkenness, family, politics - about living for another day. Although "the rope" remained ever present, Harrison listened to his poems: "My year-old daughter's red robe hangs from the doorknob shouting Stop."

Over the past thirty-five years, Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects, based in Seattle, has created a body of architecture that is recognized for its ability to merge notions of materiality, craft, and lightness, all of which are richly demonstrated in their work on art collectors' residences and art museums. The firm began its creative existence with architect Jim Olson, whose work in the late 1960s explored the complex relationship between dwellings and the landscape they inhabit. In the early 1970s the growing firm broadened its emphasis to include urbanism and the landscape of the city. Though firmly rooted in the regional features of the Pacific Northwest -- its unique climate and dramatic landscape -- the firm's work extends beyond any regionalist classification. Instead, the projects are characterized by a relaxed modernism that is attuned to its regional context. Each of the projects featured in this volume exhibits a striking use of both natural and highly refined materials, masterful modulation of light, a careful balance between monumentality and intimacy, and frequent collaborations with artists and craftsmen, especially glass artists such as Ed Carpenter. In addition to generous illustrations, including full-color and black-and-white photography and detailed drawings and plans, Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects: Architecture, Art, and Craft features a statement from the firm's partners, explicating their influence and process, and an essay by noted architectural critic Paul Goldberger.

A sales guide to selling over the phone, video conferencing, and electronically for professional closers who had mastered the art of selling in person - but are now being asked to sell remotely.Understand the differences between remote and face-to-face selling and master those selling skills.A close friend and sales strategy superstar, Jim Olson, was sharing with me some of the struggles he's seeing salespeople have. He currently runs an arm of a prestigious pre-hire employee assessment firm. He pointed out that outside sales people are "like turtles on their backs" because they aren't being allowed to sell in person. Before that conversation I had been focused on helping salespeople find prospects to meet with. In a blinding oversight I assumed sales pipelines were smaller because of the lack of economic activity. He helped me see, instead, that much of this has to do with the need for new skill sets to help closers learn to sell with virtual tools. I started working with sales professionals I coach on developing remote-selling skills and -- boom -- their pipelines picked up, closes increased, and commission checks started to look good for the first time since 1Q20.In this book I'll share with you the key skills you need to transition to doing more of the sell remotely. How to get people to meet with you. How to secure follow up meetings. How to relate and position, have presence, and build trust when you can't look them in the eye. How to move remote prospects through the sales funnel. What techniques to use to close business when you can't use the corporate card on the golf course or local mahogany-walled steak restaurant. This is a sales guide for professional closers who are being asked to sell remotely. Learn what changes to make, what skills to develop, what tools to use.
