A frequent choice for market entry to China is the international joint venture (IJV) with a Chinese partner. This is regarded as an adequate market entry if complex technological knowledge is to be transferred to the new location. However, IJVs also represent an easy way for local partners to absorb technological knowledge without authorization. Michael Hoeck investigates the character and the degree of technology transfer into IJVs, using the example of German industrial firms in China. The two central questions that are investigated are „What factors influence the sophistication of the technological endowment that an IJV in China receives from its German parents?“ and „In what way do strategic considerations regarding inter-firm cooperation and knowledge sharing influence the foreign investor’s technology transfer behaviour?“. The study results – derived from theoretical and empirical analysis – presents novel insights to both researchers and practitioners.

Confronting the wide range of factors that management face in relation to global changes, this volume focuses on the implication of these changes for organizations. By presenting its case using a variety of analytical tools ranging from formal game theoretical systems to inductive models based on case studies, this volume concentrates on three main areas: the implications of global change on the competitive environment for employment and working practices; the influence of the international business environment in decision-making; and the importance of cultural and institutional diversity. Through its comprehensive approach this book will stimulate business managers, academics and students to clarify, develop and extend the many complex scenarios that are integral to the debate on how business organizations can benefit from the challenges produced by global change.

The former Soviet Union possessed some of the world's largest reserves of energy and mineral resources. With the dissolution of the country in 1991, the former Soviet republics are now exercising complete control over their mining industries. The new Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) consists of several new nations, well-endowed in hydrocarbons, metals, and industrial materials; efforts are now underway to boost development activities and attract foreign investment. Commonwealth members today are implementing policies to regulate energy and mineral development and enhance economic growth. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the energy and minerals industries of the CIS and other former Soviet republics outside the Commonwealth. Prospects for international cooperation and trade in hydrocarbons, metals, and nonmetals are examined, as are opportunities for joint ventures and technology transfers in mining. Economic relations between the CIS and several Asian nations are also analyzed. Contributors to the book from throughout the Commonwealth, Asia, Europe, and North America have a wide variety of backgrounds in the energy and mineral fields, including government, academia, and industry.

A comprehensive study of transfer of technology for deep sea-bed mining under the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention and the controversies that have arisen about it. The book also discusses transfer of technology in international law in general and examines developments since the adoption of the 1982 Convention. These include national mining legislations of industrialized countries, extensive work by the Preparatory Commission for the establishment of the International Sea-Bed Authority and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, and the new compromise Agreement relating to the deep sea-bed mining régime adopted by the General Assembly on 28 July, 1994. The book appears at the time when the Convention enters into force (16 November 1994). It will be of interest to academic lawyers and economists with an interest in the deep sea-bed mining issue, as well as to all those in the sea-bed mining industry, in public service (governmental and inter-governmental) and in UN organizations, who are likely to get involved in deep sea-bed mining and/or transfer of technology issues.

This book provides evidence on how FDI leads to knowledge and technology transfers towards domestic firms by paying attention to the role of multinational companies. The author presents a comprehensive empirical research conducted at firm-level in the Turkish automotive industry. Using a representative sample of face-to-face in-depth interviews with top-executives and a survey of top level managers of domestic suppliers, the research analyzes the existence, channels, intensity and determinants, and the kind of transfers that occur at both inter- and intra-firm level in the industry. The author contends that policies aimed at attracting FDI flows should be re-examined under the findings and insights of this study since it is a necessary – although not sufficient - condition to have an efficient absorptive capacity level and/or skilled human capital stock in order to benefit from these flows. This study has policy implications for the automotive industry as well as practical recommendations for the public institutions and top-executives in emerging country companies and multinationals in order to conceive and implement science and technology policies in supporting the knowledge transfers.
