FATHERHOOD

Book Description

In 1992 I had a car accident and was paralyzed from the waist down. At the time my daughter was 2 months old. The night of the accident, I knew that I was supposed to die but He kept me. It's hard to put words around it yet I know it to be true. Wow! My life had changed in an instant. I realized quickly that this was not a dream. I was in midst of my toughest challenge. I was totally overwhelmed by the awesome task that lay before me, but in this vast amount of confusion the victory rested just beyond the horizon. I could not clearly see the victory, but I felt it at the core of my inner being. This was the inception of a cataclysmic boom in my soul that caused a magnetic connection between these disconnected chapters that made up my life. The stars lined up and I smelled clarity. My internal compass pointed to "be a father." I never intended to tell my story, but I did. My story is a reflection of my past and more importantly how it motivated me to be the dad I never had. I open this story on the night of my car accident where I was paralyzed. The first chapter I titled a Dimly Lit Room. The only real thing that I remember about that night was the horrendous sound of demolished metal during impact of a car accident at 75th and Outlook in Boulder, Colorado. I was on my way home. It was late, and I was tired. At the time I was an IBM computer programmer, working 60-hour weeks on a major project that was behind schedule. It was tough because I had left my wife and child in New York during the holidays to come back to Colorado early and continue working on the project. I had spent the evening with a friend of mine at one of the more popular nightspots in central Denver and climbed into my Volkswagen Jetta to make the 30-mile trip to my home in Boulder. My Life's story starts from the inner city of East Oakland, California in the belly of the beast. My father left my mom when I was 6 months old. When I was 12 years old my aunt taught me to play golf. I fell in

A Promise to Ourselves

Book Description

"I have been through some of the worst of contentious divorce litigation," Alec Baldwin declares in A Promise to Ourselves. Using a very personal approach, he offers practical guidance to help others avoid the anguish he has endured. An Academy and Tony Award nominee and a 2007 recipient of Golden Globe, SAG, and Television Critics Association Awards for best actor in a comedy, Alec Baldwin is one of the best-known, most successful actors in the world. His relationship with Kim Basinger, the Academy Award–winning actress, lasted nearly a decade. They have a daughter named Ireland, and for a time, theirs seemed to be the model of a successful Hollywood marriage. But in 2000 they separated and in 2002 divorced. Their split---specifically the custody battle surrounding Ireland---would be the subject of media attention for years to come. In his own life and others', Baldwin has seen the heavy toll that divorce can take---psychologically, emotionally, and financially. He has been extensively involved in divorce litigation, and he has witnessed the way that noncustodial parents, especially fathers, are often forced to abandon hopes of equitable rights when it comes to their children. He makes a powerful case for reexamining and changing the way divorce and child custody is decided in this country and levels a scathing attack at what he calls the "family law industry." When it comes to his experiences with judges, court-appointed therapists, and lawyers, Baldwin pulls no punches. He casts a light on his own divorce and the way the current family law system affected him, his ex-wife, and his daughter, as well as many other families. This is an important, informative, and deeply felt book on a contentious subject that offers hope of finding a better way.

Becoming the Kind Father

Book Description

The male case against patriarchy - why it hurts men, and how they can change it. The macho society that held John Wayne as a role model has created an emotional wasteland where 80 percent of men are unable to accurately express their feelings, and that same percentage feel estranged from their fathers. The stifled male, disconnected and out of touch, fills the void with apathy or anger, and the toll is staggering: short, unhealthy lives, ruined relationships, and damaged children. This destructive behavior repeats itself in the next generation as the sins of the father continue the cycle. In Becoming the Kind Father, Calvin Sandborn aims to break that cycle. His intensely personal story is heart-searing and inspirational. Brought up to fear his father’s alcohol-fueled fury and hateful put-downs, the author buried his feelings and fine-tuned his own rage. His father’s early death and the collapse of the author’s marriage provided catalysts for change. Interspersing clever literary references with painful childhood memories, intense self-examination, and astute observations, Sandborn provides well-researched psychological findings and self-help tips, including how to: Identify and share feelings Treat yourself as a kind father would Form trusting male friendships Break the anger habit Forgive the world and yourself This guide offers helpful insight for the millions of men who want to become kinder human beings. A must-read for every woman who loves an angry or emotionally distant man.
