While a number of the pieces have been previously published, McGee has extensively revised them, integrated them with substantial new material, and produced a unified collection that examines the experimental fictions of James Joyce, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, from the perspective of cultural materialism. Offering a critique of the class politics of contemporary Joyce studies, McGee insists that Joyce's later work be understood in the context of the general political economy, or conditions of production, that underlies both Joyce's career and his critical reputation. He relates debates over pedagogy and the critical editions of Joyce's works to his situation as a colonial and postcolonial subject and as a critic of the social, economic, and ethical values of capitalism. In his groundbreaking view of Joyce's politics, McGee offers a new way to understand Joyce's attitude toward violence and social change and his response to the Irish revolution and civil war. A final long essay lays out the implicit theory of social and cultural revolution in the Wake. While especially valuable to scholars of modern literature and critical theory, the work also will be important to readers in a range of fields, including politics, education, psychoanalysis, feminist and gender theory, ethics, and postcolonial theory. Beyond Marx

Capitalism has proven much more resilient than Marx anticipated, and the working class has, until now, hardly lived up to his hopes. The Marxian concept of class rests on exclusion. Only the ‘pure’ doubly-free wage-workers are able to create value; from a strategic perspective, all other parts of the world’s working populations are secondary. But global labour history suggests, that slaves and other unfree workers are an essential component of the capitalist economy. What might a critique of the political economy of labour look like that critically reviews the experiences of the past five hundred years while moving beyond Eurocentrism? Joyce's Love Stories

In his comprehensive study of love in James Joyce's writings, Christopher DeVault suggests that a love ethic persists throughout Joyce's works. DeVault uses Martin Buber's distinction between the true love for others and the narcissistic desire for oneself to frame his discussion, showing that Joyce frequently ties his characters' personal and political pursuits to their ability to affirm both their loved ones and their fellow Dubliners. In his short stories and novels, DeVault argues, Joyce shows how personal love makes possible a broader social compassion that creates a more progressive body politic. While his early protagonists' narcissism limits them to detached engagements with Dublin that impede effective political action, Joyce demonstrates the viability of his love ethic through both the Blooms’ empathy in Ulysses and the polylogic dreamtext of Finnegan's Wake. Renascent Joyce


Book Description

Revival, reinvention, and regeneration: the concept of renascence pervades Joyce’s work through the inescapable presence of his literary forebears. By persistently reexamining tradition, reinterpreting his literary heritage in light of the present, and translating and re-translating from one system of signs to another, Joyce exhibits the spirit of the greatest of Renaissance writers and artists. In fact, his writing derives some of its most important characteristics from Renaissance authors, as this collection of essays shows. Though critical work has often focused on Joyce's relationship to medieval thinkers like Thomas Aquinas and Dante, Renascent Joyce examines Joyce's connection to the Renaissance in such figures as Shakespeare, Rabelais, and Bruno. Daniel Ferrer offers a practical demonstration of the theory of genetic criticism, the study of the manuscript and textual development of a literary text. Using a concrete approach focused on the materiality of Joyce’s writing process, Ferrer demonstrates how to recover the process of invention and its internal dynamics. Using specific, detailed examples, Ferrer analyzes the part played by chance in Joyce’s creative process, the spatial dimension of writing, the genesis of the “Sirens” episode, and the transition from Ulysses to Finnegans Wake. The book includes a study of Joyce’s mysterious Finnegans Wake notebooks, examining their strange form of intertextuality in light of Joyce’s earlier forms of note-taking.
