Judith Joy Rosss most recent work is a series of photographs of people in Pennsylvania protesting the war in Iraq, the majority of which were taken at a protest called Eyes Wide Open, organized by the Quaker community. Whether photographing residents of working-class in Freeland, Pa., former Ugandan child soldiers in New York Citys Washington Square Park, or anti-war protestors, Rosss photographs reveal her distinct vision of people and place and the ensuing story each captured image reveals. The personal connection Ross is able to forge with her subjects is unmistakable and results in pictures that are sensitive reflections of both empowerment and vulnerability. With the remarkable ability to transcend socio-economic boundaries with ease, Ross creates touching portraits characterized by their candor, naturalism, and fidelity to each subjects sense of self. Judith Joy Ross, born in 1946 in Hazleton, Pa., graduated with a BS from the Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, in 1968 and received a MS degree two years later from the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. Ross has been exhibiting her photography for the past two decades. Ross is a recipient of numerous honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Charles Pratt Memorial Award, and an Andrea Frank Foundation Award. Her work can be found in numerous permanent collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum Ludwig, Cologne; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

Beta Exercise: The Theory and Practice of Osamu Kanemura is the first bilingual (Japanese-English) book to provide an overview of the theoretical work of Japanese photographer and video artist Osamu Kanemura, a unique talent and voice in the world of avant-garde contemporary photography. The opening essay "Life Is a Gift" meditates on the transformation of human life into an exchangeable commodity and the abstraction that entails. "Essay 01" develops Kanemura's idea of photographic "technique" in an era when such techniques have become accessible to all, radically undermining the importance of human subjectivity in the process of capturing the photographic image: "We can say that modern technology constitutes photographic technique." Instead, Kanemura argues, extra-technical elements such as concept and vision will have to compensate for the expression of individuality that technique is no longer able to convey. Taking cues from Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Karlheinz Stockhausen, the essay "Dead-Stick Landing" develops Kanemura's theory of the moving image as mechanical system, solely governed by an "on-off switch," while "Essay 02" develops these ideas into a consideration of cinematic time and the experience of boredom in cinema as the result of a truthful "loyalty" expressed to machines, and not to stories. The essays are accompanied by an extensive two-part interview with Italian photographer Marco Mazzi, touching upon topics ranging from the technical aspects of Kanemura's equipment, the concept of non-editing, and the destruction of the frame to the similarity between Mao's dialectics and the camera, the presence of the human figure as trace, and the politics of photographing Tokyo. Osamu Kanemura was born in 1964 in Tokyo, Japan. In the 1980s, after performing as a punk-rock musician, he entered the film school "Image Forum" in Tokyo where he made several 16 mm experimental films. In 1990 he entered the Tokyo College of Photography, and before graduating in 1993, he was invited to the Photography Biennale in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Since then, he has held numerous solo exhibitions and has participated in various group shows in Japan and abroad. His photographs are found in public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the Yokohama Museum of Art. Besides his well-recognized black-and-white photographs of cityscapes, Kanemura also continues to work on videos and moving images.




Paz Errázuriz: Survey

Chilean photographer Paz Errazuriz (born 1944) began taking photographs in the 1970s during the Pinochet dictatorship, and in subsequent decades traveled extensively to document the landscape and people of her native country. During the dictatorship Errazuriz frequently violated the regulations imposed by the military regime, daring to visit underground brothels, shelters, psychiatric wards and boxing clubs-- all places where women were not welcome. Throughout her career, Errazuriz became intimately acquainted with not only her home city, Santiago, but also Chile's central valley, Patagonia and Valparaiso, forming long-lasting relationships with her subjects. She became known for spending months or years within a given community, building trust and carefully studying social structures. Diane Arbus

Diane Arbus was one of the greatest photographers of the last century. Her portraiture of freaks, circus performers, twins, nudists and others on the social margins connected with a wide public at a deep psychological level. Her suicide in New York in 1971 overshadowed the reception to her work. Her posthumous exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art a year later drew lines around the block. She was born into a Russian-Jewish family, the Nemerovs, who owned a department store on Fifth Avenue. They were family friends with the Avedons. Richard Avedon later championed Arbus’s work. Avedon rose to greater and greater commercial success through the magazine world. Arbus died in a rent-protected apartment scrambling to earn her keep with odd teaching assignments. Lubow’s biography begins at the moment Arbus quit the world of commercial photography to be an artist. She was uncompromising in that ambition. The book ends with her death. The entire narrative is a slow march towards that event.

Day Sleeper

In this book, Sam Contis presents a new window onto the work of the American photographer Dorothea Lange. Drawing from Lange's extensive archive, Contis constructs a fragmented, unfamiliar world centred around the figure of the day sleeper - at once a symbol of respite and oblivion. The book shows us one artist through the eyes of another, with Contis responding to resonances between her and Lange's ways of seeing. It reveals a largely unknown side of Lange, and includes previously unseen photographs of her family, portraiture from her studio, and pictures made in the streets of San Francisco and the East Bay. Day Sleeper will be featured alongside other works of Contis's in the exhibition Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures at the Museum of Modern Art, February-May 2020.
