What Brings a Soldier to His Knees

Book Description

I have fought the torments of combat and of being a Christian. I always questioned myself with God and war many times and felt that I might have something to say that could help someone else going through the life experiences and having the similar questions. I have learned that we must work together in Christ to make a difference in life. Being a soldier in the United States Army was the life that I knew and wanted. I don t regret things of the past in service, however I wish peace could happen. God does not hold you accountable for doing what you have to do while on the battle field as long as you do it with integrity and a humble heart. Through this book I have come to terms with what I once could not face. I have been put at ease with many things that once haunted me. My prayer is that, if you too are in the same situation I was, through this book you will find solace. This has drawn my family together even more closely, because God is good all the time, and all the time God is good!

Hard Rain

Book Description

Stephen King’s “favorite American suspense novelist” plunges a woman into secrets of the 1960s and ’70s as she races to save her daughter. Peter Abrahams (also known as Spencer Quinn, New York Times–bestselling author of the Chet and Bernie Mysteries) delivers a gripping thriller about a Los Angeles single mother caught up in a conspiracy with roots in 1969’s Woodstock Festival. Jessie Shapiro restores paintings for a living, but ever since her divorce from unfaithful musician Pat, she can barely make ends meet. One weekend, Pat fails to bring their ten-year-old daughter, Kate, home. When Jessie goes to his Venice Beach house, she hears a disturbing cut-off message on his answering machine and discovers strange foreign words written in big block letters on his kitchen blackboard. Then her life is threatened. The police are dragging their feet, so Jessie embarks on her own search for Kate. Her quest takes her across the country and back decades, from the drug haze of Woodstock to the lethal jungles of Vietnam to the highest echelons of Russian and American intelligence. The truth—more shocking than she ever imagined—may not set her free. But it could cost her everything.

On The Trail Of Negro Folk-Songs

Book Description

How often have I overheard alluring snatches of song, only to be baffled by denial when I asked for more. Kindly black faces smile indulgently as at the vagaries of an imaginative child, when I persist in pleading for the rest. "Nawm, honey, I wa and n and t singing nothing — nothing a-tall! " How often have I been tricked into enthusiasm over the promise of folk-songs, only to hear age-worn phonograph records, — but perhaps so changed and worked upon by usage that they could possibly claim to be folk-songs after all! — or Broadway echoes, or conventional songs by white authors! Yet cajolements might be in vain, even though all the time I knew, by the uncanny instinct of folk-lorists, that there were folk-songs there. And even when you get a song started, when you are listening with your heart in your ear and the greed of the folk-lorist in your eye, you may lose out. If you seem too much interested, the song retreats, draws in like a turtle and s head, and no amount of coaxing will make it venture back. And there is something positively fatal about a pencil! Songs seem to be afraid of lead-poisoning. Or perhaps the pencil is secretly attached by a cord (a vocal cord?) to the singer and s tongue. It must be so, for otherwise, why has it so often happened that when I, distrustful of my tricky memory to hold a precious song, have sneaked a pencil out to take notes, the tongue has suddenly jerked back and refused to wag again? Yet that is not always the case, for sometimes the knowledge that his song is being written down inspires a bard with more respect for it and he gives it freely.

Wasted Prayer

Book Description

Faith without obedience is dead. Prayer without action is wasted. What would your life look like if you stopped praying about God’s will and just did it instead? How would your church look if it spent as much time serving as it spent praying about serving? The truth is, sometimes when you think you’re praying, you’re really just procrastinating. And when you think you’re asking that God’s will be done, you’re really telling him no. In times that call for action, prayer can be disobedience in disguise. Wasted Prayer uncovers the ways we use prayer to dodge responsibility for the work God has assigned us. Complete with punch-in-the-gut biblical exposition that will help get you off your knees—and out of your chair—Wasted Prayer will provide you with the jolt you need to start living like a Christian, instead of just praying like one. It’s time to stop praying and start doing.
