La Mia Famiglia

Book Description

From modest beginnings in a Pennsylvania coal mine to the height of success in Tampa, Florida, there was one constant threat in the Scarpo family's lives--the mafia. In small-town Pennsylvania, Tony Scarpo's grandfather Antonio, an immigrant from Bari, Italy, ran afoul of a gangster who terrorized the family for months. Antonio's message to his children was: "Never let them steal your name." It was a lesson Tony's father, Art Scarpo, took with him into the bar business in Tampa, a lesson he never forgot when the Trafficante crime family came calling. Alongside the Chicago Syndicate and New York's Five Families, the Trafficantes were one of the pillars of the American Mafia. But little Tony had no idea why his father came home beaten and bloodied. He was just a kid growing up on the outskirts of Tampa, with little-boy dreams and calls to adventure. His 'normal' featured sideshow freaks, crime, violence, bizarre deaths--and murder. As he grew older, however, his father peeled back the veneer to reveal just how dangerous it was for a bar owner in Tampa and how devastating it was to say 'no' to the Trafficante crime family. But could the Scarpo family escape the reign of terror brought down by the mob while saving both their name and their lives? Read this enthralling, heart-wrenching story of one family's struggle against organized crime and of one boy's coming of age that was anything but 'normal.'

Family Relationships in Contemporary Crime Fiction

Book Description

Behind every crime novel there is a family. The author’s, the hero’s (or the heroine’s), and that of the villains themselves. Some families organise themselves into crime syndicates, controlling drugs, prostitution and illegal gambling. Others are simply dysfunctional, tearing themselves apart, fathers against sons, mothers against daughters, sisters against brothers, husbands against wives. Not everyone escapes alive. However, families do not exist in a vacuum. They are an important part of our society—for many, one of its most essential building blocks. That being said, society itself can impinge disastrously on personal relationships. War, that greatest of crimes, leaves children bereft of parents. Generations of children are stolen by cynical, racist administrators in supposedly civilised countries. Religion requires its followers to flourish and multiply, while abandoning all—including family—for their faith. All of these issues and more are explored in this collection of essays about crime fiction and the family.

La Famiglia & Their Blind Advocate

Book Description

This is the history of an extraordinary family which begins in the early 1800s and continues through six generations to the present time. Part One begins with the first generation in 1814 when we meet Domenico Miniscarchi, Attorney General of Southern Italy. A generation later a Sicilian "Don" joins the family and plays a vital role in the immigration of numerous southern Italian families to America, including the Espositos (the original name of the Sposeto family), and the Iaquintas. Prohibition was fast approaching and it was at this time the family, while living in Des Moines, Iowa, became involved in bootlegging, which erupted into warring factions in the Italian underworld at the turn of the century. Murder and retaliation left a trail of tears and devastation. Part Two takes us to the 1940s where, with the assistance of influential Sicilian connections and the generosity of the matriarch of the family, the fourth generation left the Midwest and found a better way of life in California. Part Three brings us to the fifth generation where we meet young Dominic who became blind in his early twenties and struggled with his orientation and blindness. Through much mentoring and nurturing, he became a highly distinguished and respected attorney, extending his practice across America. Dom's ancestors' passion for returning the family to an honorable position was at last realized.
