The scenes are diverse, every phase of fell life out of doors in which I have found the picturesque having been laid under contribution. It is the narrative of one who, in a dozen years of wandering, has been brought into close contact with shepherds, poachers, anglers, and dalesmen of various degrees. If a preponderance of attention appears to be given to sport, it is because recollections of this side of life are easier and more vividly retained than are those of ordinary workdays. After the first three chapters (two of which are almost personal), the arrangement is according to the sequence from spring to spring in which the various scenes may be encountered.
