Lake Road, Last House

Book Description

Jacob Carlyle has been living his best life as a successful political pundit. His comfortable existence goes into meltdown, however, when right-wing activists go public with a hidden-camera video of Jacob in a hotel room with the married son of an ultra-conservative politician. Suddenly Jacob is the target of attacks from both ends of the political spectrum, and he retreats to his late grandfather's remote farmhouse to try to sort out the mess he has made of his life. He finds an ally in childhood friend Benny Stokes, and with Benny's quiet encouragement Jacob finally begins work on his long-delayed novel, although not without distractions from invading wildlife, a hostile barn cat, eccentric contractors, and his evolving feelings for Benny. Jacob soon discovers that he can't build a future without first coming to grips with the past.

Every summer, she drops her children off with her mother at the lakeside community where she spent summers growing up, but cannot bear to stay herself; everything about the lake reminds her of the guilt she feels. For her daughter Caroline, however, the lake is a precious world apart; its familiarity and sameness comforts her every year despite the changes in her life outside its bounds. At twelve years old and caught between childhood and adolescence, she longs to win her mother's love and doesn't understand why Jo keeps running away. Then seven-year-old Sara Starr goes missing from the community beach. Rescue workers fail to uncover any sign of her—but instead dredge up the bones Jo hoped would never be discovered, shattering the quiet lakeside community's tranquility. Caroline was one of the last people to see Sara alive on the beach, and feels responsible for her disappearance. She takes it upon herself to figure out what happened to the little girl. As Caroline searches for Sara, she uncovers the secrets her mother has been hiding, unraveling the very foundation of everything she knows about herself and her family. A Hobo's Son and an Orphan Girl

Book Description

This book started out as a set of adventure stories that have been published locally in several outdoor newsletters. These stories were so well received that the adventures in other parts of the life of the author and his family were added. A love story naturally evolved because that was what kept them going and led them from the wilderness where they grew up to the big cities working in politics, aerospace, and other advanced technologies. They combined this “city work” with many kinds of adventures, mostly adventures in wild and unexplored mountains. The love became obvious as Bob struggled for over 50 years to satisfy a promise he made to a 13-year-old girl in grade school: “Someday I will build you a castle on a mountain!” The book is interesting because it describes a lifetime of outdoor adventures and the effort of two kids to stay alive and progress up the social ladder. The relevant message is that two very poor kids at the bottom of the social ladder can not only survive but rise to the top. The story is unique because the adventures have been experienced by no one else. From Bob falling off an 80-foot cliff, to Luci battling a new form of cancer that was supposed to take her life. Readers should take away a good feeling reading about successfully living through many adventures in the mountains and in social life. About the Author Bob Bristow has a BS in Mechanical Engineering, an MS in aeronautical Engineering, and all PhD coursework completed in Aerospace Engineering. He worked for Boeing for over 60 years where he built and ran his own research lab. He was an elder in his church and was involved in many professional organizations. Bob enjoys skiing, scuba diving, mountain climbing, fishing, and hunting. He is most passionate about prospecting and mining.
