National Puzzlers' League Cryptic Crosswords

Book Description

The National Puzzlers' League (NPL) was founded in 1883 and is the oldest puzzlers' organization in the world. For over 100 years, crosswords and other word puzzles that appear in the NPL's monthly magazine, The Enigma, could be enjoyed only by NPL members. Now, for the first time, a selection of the league's favorite cryptic crosswords is available in book form for puzzle fans everywhere to enjoy. Unlike regular crossword puzzles, each clue in a cryptic crossword has two parts--one that's straightforward and one that involves one or more types of wordplay--and part of the fun is determining which part is which and what type of wordplay is involved. For example, Shoestring allowances lead to tears (11) is a cryptic clue for LACERATIONS. The straightforward part of the clue is tears, which is a definition for LACERATIONS. The wordplay part of the clue is Shoestring allowances which can be expressed as LACE + RATIONS which lead to LACERATIONS. The number in parentheses tells you the number and length of the answer words--in this case, it's one 11-letter word. Another example, with a different type of wordplay is Rearrange, rearrange ram's front (9) which is a cryptic clue for TRANSFORM. Rearrange is a straightforward definition of TRANSFORM and rearrange ram's front tells you to rearrange, or anagram, the nine letters in ram's front giving you the nine-letter word TRANSFORM. One of most fascinating things about cryptics is that the clues are a combination of tremendous creativity and imagination, on one hand, and strict, formal rules, on the other. This book contains 45 variety cryptics from members of the NPL, many of them by distinguished puzzle authors, as well as a foreword by Will Shortz, the New York Times crossword editor and the NPL's official historian PuzzleMeter: Difficulty--Very Difficult; Style--Contemporary]

560 Cryptogram Puzzles Vol 2

Book Description

560 Cryptograms for Cryptogram Puzzle Book Lovers! Book Details 8.5 × 11 inches 232 pages 560 Cryptograms in easy to read large print font No weird hard to read fonts Excellent ratio of short, medium, and long cryptogram puzzles Hand-selected motivational, inspirational, thought-provoking and entertaining quotes Three sets of hints for each cryptogram puzzle Full solutions at the back of the book All quote authors credited where known Plenty of space to write I have been collecting quotes for over 20 years, from before the internet was a thing! I started writing them down whenever I heard or read one that affected me. I first started my quote collection in a spiral-bound notebook that I would carry around with me in case I heard something I liked and wanted to write it down. The quote collection has now grown into an Excel spreadsheet containing over 10,000 A mixture of inspirational, motivational, heart-warming, and thought-provoking quotes. Once I discovered cryptograms, I just knew had to create a book! I have carefully selected some of my favorite quotes from the collection and created 560 cryptoquotes for my second cryptogram book. I have reviewed all the quotes for any spelling or grammar issues. I have checked, and triple checked everything in this book so you can enjoy solving the puzzles without the annoying errors that seem to be a prevalent theme with cryptogram puzzle books. I even checked that there were no offensive words accidentally created within the cryptoquotes! I have poured my heart and soul into making this cryptogram book, so I hope you enjoy solving all the puzzles to reveal the inspiring and motivating quotes. I can guarantee that there are no vulgar or offensive quotes in the book. It would be safe to give a copy to your Mom for Christmas. I tried to get the right mix of short, medium, and long cryptograms. You will find quotes from 380 different famous people within my book of cryptograms. When selecting the quotes to use, I excluded many that I have seen in almost every book I have bought. Remember that Cryptogram Puzzle Books are an excellent way to keep your brain sharp. Although I created this book for adults, smart kids will have fun with this book. Cryptoquote puzzle books are just what you need to keep the brain active, which is even more essential as we age. Can you break the code in this book of Cryptograms? To solve a cryptogram (sometimes referred to as cryptoquip or cryptoquote puzzles) you will need to use a mixture of pattern recognition, frequency analysis, and a basic understanding of English language syntax and grammar. Don't worry, if you get completely stumped, there are hints at the end of the book, just before the answers pages. There are three hints for each puzzle, which should help you crack the code. The answers are in at the very back of the book, so you won't accidentally see the solution when you're looking up the hint. Cryptoquote puzzles are one of the best ways to sharpen your mind and polish your reasoning skills.
