Das Thema Laster im Mittelalter zeichnet sich durch seine Kontinuität über das gesamte Mittelalter aus und hat seine Wurzeln in der Spätantike und seine Nachwirkungen in der Neuzeit. Es berührt fast alle Bereiche mittelalterlicher Kultur und hat eine unerschöpfliche Literatur hervorgebracht. Der Sammelband beruht auf den Ergebnissen des Freiburger Kolloquiums 2006, das sich erstmals mit der langen Tradition der sieben Todsünden und den mittelalterlichen Lasterkatalogen befasste, und vereint die Beiträge namhafter Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler unterschiedlicher Fachrichtungen. Laster wurden im Mittelalter systematisch geordnet: Sie wurden in Hauptlaster eingeteilt, aus denen andere Laster hervorgingen, als Sünden verstanden und dienten darüber hinaus ganz allgemein der Beschreibung menschlicher Leidenschaften und Handlungen. Aus historischer, literaturwissenschaftlicher, theologischer, philosophischer, kunst- und rechtshistorischer Perspektive entwerfen die neun Beiträge in deutscher, englischer und französischer Sprache ein lebendiges Bild der Wünsche und Ängste des mittelalterlichen Menschen, aber auch des gesellschaftlichen Lebens im Mittelalter.

Characterized by many historically significant events, such as the invention of the printing press, the discovery of the New World, and the Protestant Reformation, the years between 1300 and 1600 are a remarkably rich source of ideas about the mind. Sin: Essays on the Moral Tradition in the Western Middle Ages

Richard Newhauser examines here aspects of the moral tradition of medieval thought, specifically the construction of the seven deadly sins, their offspring, and related schematizations of immorality in the Latin West. The emphasis in these studies is on the malleability of moral categories, their relationship to changes in medieval culture, and the creativity and sensitivity of the thinkers who made use of the concepts of sinfulness in the Middle Ages. The first section examines the contexts in which the seven deadly sins (or nine accessory sins) are found in medieval Latin, English, and German texts, and in particular the genre of the treatise on vices and virtues as the major vehicle in which concepts of immorality were examined and presented to a variety of audiences for meditative or pastoral purposes. The second section deals with one of the more interesting of the seven deadly sins, avarice, in its penitential, literary, apocalyptic, and institutional contexts, as its definition changed slowly with developing commercial experiences in medieval Europe. In the last section the breadth of the concept of a sinful curiosity is examined, and its historical development is delineated in the thought of Augustine of Hippo and the early Cistercians.

The fourth volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress “The Many Languages of Comparative Literature” includes articles that study thematic and formal elements of literary texts. Although the question of prioritizing either the level of content or that of form has often provoked controversies, most contributions here treat them as internally connected. While theoretical considerations inform many of the readings, the main interest of most articles can be described as rhetorical (in the widest sense) – given that the ancient discipline of rhetoric did not only include the study of rhetorical figures and tropes such as metaphor, irony, or satire, but also that of topoi, which were originally viewed as the ‘places’ where certain arguments could be found, but later came to represent the arguments or intellectual themes themselves. Another feature shared by most of the articles is the tendency of ‘undeclared thematology’, which not only reflects the persistence of the charge of positivism, but also shows that most scholars prefer to locate themselves within more specific, often interdisciplinary fields of literary study. In this sense, this volume does not only prove the ongoing relevance of traditional fields such as rhetoric and thematology, but provides contributions to currently flourishing research areas, among them literary multilingualism, literature and emotions, and ecocriticism.

Human Nature in Early Franciscan Thought

In this book, Lydia Schumacher challenges the common assumption that early Franciscan thought simply reiterates the longstanding tradition of Augustine. She demonstrates how scholars from this tradition incorporated the work of Islamic and Jewish philosophers, whose works had recently been translated from Arabic, with a view to developing a unique approach to questions of human nature. These questions pertain to perennial philosophical concerns about the relationship between the body and the soul, the work of human cognition and sensation, and the power of free will. By highlighting the Arabic sources of early Franciscan views on these matters, Schumacher illustrates how scholars working in the early thirteenth century anticipated later developments in Franciscan thought which have often been described as novel or unprecedented. Above all, her study demonstrates that the early Franciscan philosophy of human nature was formulated with a view to bolstering the order's specific theological and religious ideals.
