Those who are more immediately responsible for its issue have been actuated, independently of this external appeal, by an affectionate desire to furnish a memorial of an original and highly gifted man, considered by many to have few rivals in his special department of scholarship. They venture also to hope that it may exercise some reinvigorating influence upon a branch of scholarship which has flourished in this country in the past, but is at present, in the opinion of some competent judges, exhibiting unmistakable symptoms of decay.
