Lawn Tennis for Ladies (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Lawn Tennis for Ladies S a rule an author writes a preface to explain or to apologize for a book. I shall do neither: I have tried to explain my meaning simply and clearly in the book itself, and I am optimistic enough to think that my favourite game is too popular to require an apology for increasing its litera ture, however unpretentious the attempt may be. Moreover, I am still too much affected by the brilliant and feverish glow of enthusiasm to dream of offering one. Two things only I wish to say. First, that I am writing with no academic pride, but only with a passionate fondness for what I consider a great sport, and with a keen desire to make others equally devoted. Lawn Tennis Lessons (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Lawn Tennis Lessons For those who know nothing of the game, there fore, it will be necessary to furnish a brief intro duction. The rules themselves, the measure ments of the court and such other details will be found in the last pages of this volume, but these do not actually tell one how to play the game. Briefly then, lawn tennis is played by two, three or four persons divided into teams, with one or two on each side of the net which separates the contestants. The play is called singles if only one player appears on each side and doubles if two are on each side. Occasionally two players oppose one, and then the lines of the court for singles are used on the Side with one player and the wider court for doubles is used by the side with two players. Lawn Tennis

Book Description

Excerpt from Lawn Tennis: With a Chapter for Ladies I have followed in my arrangement of the subject-matter the same lines as Dr. Dwight - which, indeed, I think are the only lines compatible with at all systematic treatment. My grateful acknowledgments are due to the many gentlemen who have been kind enough to assist me by communicating their views on the game. For the historical part of the subject, I am mainly indebted to Mr. Henry Jones and Mr. Daniel Jones. Messrs. Carter and Co., the well-known seedsmen, were good enough to place at my disposal much valuable information, of which I regret to say I have only been able to avail myself to a very limited extent. For the omissions and imperfections of this work I apologize: they have partly been caused by the claims of other pursuits more serious even than lawn tennis. But I venture to hope that what I have written may yet prove of some interest to that great and ever-increasing body, the lawn-tennis playing community.
