Leading Cases in the Bible (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Leading Cases in the Bible A Leading Case is one which decides some par ticular point in question, and to which reference is constantly or frequently made, for the purpose of determining the law in similar questions. (bou vier.) In the strict sense of this definition the cases in this volume cannot be called leading cases, al though they have been frequently cited, not only in the Jewish lawbooks, but also in the ecclesiastical and civil courts of Christendom. Although many of them are legendary accounts and not actual records of cases decided in courts of law, I have chosen the title Leading Cases for them because they are the first records of their kind and, by reason of the fact that they are embodied in the Biblical literature, have maintained throughout the centuries a position of preeminence as authorities, not only in questions of law, but also in matters of doctrine, of faith and of history. Stories From the Bible (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Stories From the Bible I have endeavoured to re-tell some of the chief stories of the Old Testament in the hope that what I have written may, with God's blessing, help those who teach and those who learn. To account for and defend the omissions that I have made and the explanations that I have added is impossible within the limits of a preface. They must be left to the kind judgment of my readers, who will not fail to understand that a task which may at first sight seem easy is really very difficult. The language of Scripture has been commonly followed, sometimes imitated to the best of my power. Explanations which could not be so expressed have been put into the shape of notes. I hope to follow this volume with a second in which others of the Old Testament Stories will be given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The That-Clause

Book Description

Excerpt from The That-Clause: In the Authorized Version of the Bible In order to substantiate certain generalizations incident to the preparation of a forthcoming volume on Old English syntax, I have found it necessary to take somewhat detailed notes upon texts later than those immediately under survey. Encouraged by the suggestion of my friend and master, Professor Albert S. Cook, of Yale University, I am publishing a few of these for whatever value they may have for others working in this field. A few months ago an earlier study, mentioned on the following page, appeared in Herrig's Archiv. The present brochure, containing a larger group of phenomena, arranged in topical order, is likewise offered as a mere bit of rubble in the foundation-wall of English syntax, which a stronger and more skilful hand than mine may some day build. It is a pleasant duty to thank my colleagues, Professor Thomas B. Macartney and Professor Charles B. Newcomer, for valued help in reading the proof-sheets; and to acknowledge gratefully the assistance of my wife throughout the preparation of this paper. Graded Bible Stories (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Graded Bible Stories There is a demand rapidly taking form and expression for a new modern program of Christian nurture. The de mand arises from those who confess to more or less defeat and failure in trying to get results by following the old program. They are aware of their failure, which is not the case with all. They are forced to admit that new conditions, customs and ideals, have made the old program ineffective and impracticable. The home, the school, and the church once dealt with the problem of Christian nurture, but now they do not. The present function of the church school scarcely needs to be named as an exception, for there are not many schools which really deal with this problem; and there are fewer still which succeed with it. The working out of the problem of Christian nurture has no doubt been greatly retarded by insistent demands for standardization and uniformity. Too often those who have set up the standards have not apprehended the problem. Great labor, expenditure and organization have been conspicuously in evidence, Without producing the results of a true Christian nurture. Not only so, they have stood in the way and pre vented other attempts to solve the problem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The War and the Bible (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The War and the Bible In every country the Great War has created not merely military and economic problems, but also spiritual problems of many aspects. M. Henri Bergson has remarked that upon the outbreak of the war, France at once changed spiritually - she became like a cathedral, solemn and grave. No one who was in France in those fateful days of August, 1914, could escape that transformation. The air was charged with spiritual awe. A similar effect the War has had in every other country touched by it, though, of course, each has expressed it in its own way. It is not certain to what degree we have been spiritually affected by the War. Perhaps there has not yet been that impact upon our mind and soul, that challenge, that catharsis, which others have experienced, and which has found voice in so many of the literary productions of the past four years. But that it is sure to come, there is not the shadow of a doubt. "Man liveth not by bread alone" - this the War has proved anew. Story of the Bible (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Story of the Bible It must always be remembered that Christianity did not spring from the New Testament but the New Testament from Christianity. Christianity did not begin as a religion of books but as a religion of spirit. There was neither time nor need to write books when the Lord Jesus was at the very doors. Still less was there need of authoritative books to guide men whose dominant conviction was that they had the Mind of Christ, the very Spirit of God, guiding them constantly from within. The Construction of the Bible (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Construction of the BibleThis little book consists of' two lectures which were given at the Chautauqua in Matlock last sum mer. They are printed on the suggestion of the authorities of the Sunday School Union, in the hope that they may introduce a larger audience to the studies with which they are concerned By the title, The Construction of the Bible, is meant not so much the origin of its contents in the minds of the writers - a subject which Opens up the great question of inspiration, its mode and method - as the putting together of the several parts of Scripture in one volume. This story of construction, therefore, is wholly literary and historical. At the same time it is necessary to be in some degree acquainted with it if we would understand the mutual relations of the various parts of what is seen to be a slowly unfold.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Child's Life of Christ

Book Description

Excerpt from Child's Life of Christ: Stories From the Bible I have been asked to prepare this little aid for your use in the Home - that first and greatest of schools. The school was founded by the Maker of men, and He called mothers to be its earliest and most important teachers. He prepared a text-book for it which we call His Word, illustrating it richly and fully from life and Nature, and filling it with His Spirit. Wherever it is known, as the children become the members of the Church, the citizens of the State, the people of the World, the Book goes with them, forming the Church, the State, the World. It is not only equal to the need, but contains infinite riches that wait to be unveiled. That no busy mother may say, "I cannot take time to gather from the Bible the simple lessons that my children need," this book of little stories - together making one - has been written. I have tried to preserve the pure outlines of the sacred record from the vivid description and the suggestive supposition that are sometimes introduced to add charm to the story, and in all quoted speech I have used the exact words of the authorized version of the Scriptures, so that the earliest impression made upon the memory of the child might be one that should remain. The stories are not a substitute for the Word - only little approaches to it through which young feet may be guided by her who holds a place next to the great Teacher in His work with little children.
