Having lectured on the whole Prophecies of Ifaiah, I now publifh, with fome meafure of diffidence and folicitude, this volume, as a fpe cimen of the work, which would require about four volumes more to comprehend what re mains of the expofition. I fondly hope, that this fample, which I now offer to the public infpec tion, will prove, through the divine blefiing, acceptable and ufeful to fome of thofe who are pleafed to perufe it. Should they experience half the pleafure in reading, which I enjoyed in compofing and delivering thefe Leettfres, my labour will not be loft, and their time and ex pence fully compenfated. It does not seek to dupli cate other commentaries to which the student must turn. Prophecy and Poetry

Book Description

Excerpt from Prophecy and Poetry: Studies in Isaiah and Browning; The Bohlen Lectures Played a large part in my work. There are persons, good citizens and doers of the moral law, who find Isaiah dull and Browning unintelligible. If this book, through some inadvertence or the gift of ill judged friends, should fall into the hands of any such, they will presently cast it from them as the abomination of desolation. They will be right. It was never meant for them. But I am not without h0pe that there may be some who have known and loved Isaiah, while they have not known much about Browning, and some others, who have known and loved Browning, while they have thought of Isaiah as inspired but without much human in terest, Whom my book may lead to want to know the other better. It is those who have cared much for both who will know best Whether I have done my work well or ill. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
