Letters from a Young Emigrant in Manitoba (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Letters From a Young Emigrant in Manitoba This little book consists of letters written from America by a young emigrant, giving an account of the first two years of his life, with a short introduction by his parents, with whose permission they are published. They are printed exactly as they were written, except that a few details, which could have no interest for the outside reader, are omitted, and that a name is occasionally changed. If the chance of their being useful to other young Englishmen, who may be thinking of following a like career, is not a valid pretext for their publication, I. The Backwoods of Canada

Book Description

Excerpt from The Backwoods of Canada: Being Letters From the Wife of an Emigrant Officer Among the numerous works on Canada that have been published within the last ten years, with emigration for their leading theme, there are few, if any, that give information regarding the domestic economy of a settlers life, sufficiently minute to prove a faithful guide to the person on whose responsibility the whole comfort of a family depends - the mistress, whose department it is "to baud the house in order." Dr. Dunlop, it is true, has published a witty and spirited pamphlet, "The Backwoodsman," but it does not enter into the routine of feminine duties and employment, in a state of emigration. Indeed, a woman's pen alone can describe half that is requisite to be told of the internal management of a domicile in the backwoods, in order to enable the outcoming female emigrant to form a proper judgment of the trials and arduous duties she has to encounter. "Forewarned, forearmed," is a maxim of our forefathers, containing much matter in its pithy brevity; and, following its spirit, the writer of the following pages has endeavoured to afford every possible information to the wives and daughters of emigrants of the higher class who contemplate seeking a home amid our Canadian wilds. Letters From North America, Vol. 1 of 2

Book Description

Excerpt from Letters From North America, Vol. 1 of 2: Written During a Tour in the United States and Canada On my return home, I found that my letters had been preserved and collected, in order to be copied, if I should give permission. On look ing them over, I was induced to believe, that those on the subject of emigration, contained some particulars which might be useful at that time. When so many persons were leaving their country to seek subsistence in the Western wilds; and under this impression, I sent three or four letters to a respectable periodical publication, in which they were in setted-and, agreeably to my express injune tion, without my name. By Ocean Prairie and Peak

Book Description

Excerpt from By Ocean Prairie and Peak: Some Gleanings From an Emigrant Chaplain's Log, on Journeys to British Columbia, Manitoba, and Eastern Canada IN a smoke-beaten Vicarage, a few hundred yards back from the grey North Sea, emigrants have had farewell talks before starting for new homes in the Far West. The clatter-clatter of a hundred hammers in the ship-yards of the Wear are faintly heard, and the deep thud-thud of a huge steam-hammer merci lessly shakes that home by night and by day. Yet, when all is still with a Sabbath stillness, the call of the tide can at times be heard, and the echoing boom of incoming steamers signalling as they enter the harbour or pass up the Wear. The incessant strain to body, soul, and spirit of a populous parish, and the constant facing of sorrow and sin, would cause a breakdown if there were not pauses. These pauses - never very long - have from time to time been filled with diverse experiences. Parishioners have protested that they were not true holidays. At all events they were a change of scene and work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
