Letters from the Sea Side (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Letters From the Sea Side I do not, however, mean that we are shut up entirely to the companionship of plants, trees, and birds - nor do I mean that the voices of nature, (the roar of the ocean and the music of the grasshoppers, the crickets and the toads) can reconcile us to the absence of human voices, and the cherished society of human friends. A Bundle of Letters from Over the Sea (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Bundle of Letters From Over the Sea Well, was not this starting for Europe in a hurry? I left Boston Saturday, June 9th, at five A. M., only deciding the day previous to go. A number of letters and telegrams, from New York, urging me to join a delightful party who were to make the journey, proved to be too much of a temptation to accept the change I so much needed, to resist. For sev eral previous seasons I have seen friends off. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Letters From Across the Sea

Book Description

Excerpt from Letters From Across the Sea: 1907-1908 This is not a guide-book. Hand-books of travel are useful in their place but uncommonly dull reading. These are not the letters of a man who saw a lot of things for the first time and forthwith conceived that he had discovered them\and must needs reveal them to others. Of such books there are not a few - in point of fact too many save from the standpoint of the printer. These are the letters of a cultured, f ar-travelled man to members of his own family, written with that inti macy which involves freedom and candor and with the intent of revealing to somehextent his heart, mind, and soul to absent loved ones. Lthey are also of interest be cause they form a Viewpoint of one who in his time has played many parts in the development of his own coun try along the lines of greatest resistance. The captains of industry in this country are of two kinds: those who take a wholly objective view of life and those others who possess the introspective mind. To accomplish any great deed it is necessary to be gifted with imagination, but many possess it for mere material purposes. I think any one who reads these letters will note that the writer has the power of critical analysis in an unusualdegree; that he sees beneath the surface of things and has found richness in the Old World because he took riches of the mind with him. Some men simply see stones and others find in them a sermon. Some find in the running brooks only possi bilities of commercial development and others read there a book. In the last analysis, we get just as much out of life as we put into it. I think that these letters with all their charm' of personal intimacy, their keenness of per ception, and their largeness of view betray an unusual literary quality. This is because the writer thinks clearly. No other equipment is necessary. It is the beginning and ending of style. The reader will note here some new angles of perspective although they cover for the most part main-travelled roads. He will be interested not in the things themselves so much as in the point of View of the writer. It is the personal note that gives them charm and value, and human personality lies at the bottom of our interest in everything. The Sea Letter

Book Description

Excerpt from The Sea Letter: A Mystery of Martha's Vineyard An olive-green island lay panting beneath a fervid summer sun amid swirling currents and violent tides of dark blue sea. Great parti-colored clay bluffs and a light-house faced the west, and a low sandy point and a light-house marked the eastern extremity. A line of shining surf along the South shore, broken only where a brown boulder reared its washed face above, or a vagrant stream flowed out to sea, showed over the sand dunes and green meadows like a fringe of silver. Great hills along the North shore, covered by grass and boulders, or by forests of pine, oak and locust, protected the adjacent valleys and the interior plain from wintry gales. Wild grape-vines, hawthorn, and berry-bushes grew in ravines and upon hillsides. Pastures and cultivated fields lay between woodlands; and riotous gardens hugged the farm-houses that were scattered rather sparingly over the country. From Sea to Sea, Vol. 2

Book Description

Excerpt from From Sea to Sea, Vol. 2: And Other Sketches, Letter of Travel Get that girl to give back your gig-lamps, and you will be able to see more clearly into the soul of the Far East. The Far East hasn't got a soul. She swapped it for a Constitution on the Eleventh of February last. Can any Constitution make up for the wear ing of Europe clothes? I saw a Jap lady just now in full afternoon calling-kit. She looked atrocious. Have you seen the later Japanese art - the pictures on the fans and in the shop win dows? They are faithful reproductions of the changed life - telegraph poles down the streets, conventionalised tram-lines, top-hats, and carpet bags in the hands of the men. The artists can make those things almost passable, but when it comes to conventionalising a Europe dress, the effect is horrible. Japan wishes to take her place among civilised nations, said the Professor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
