Lexington and Concord

Book Description

Mr. Tourtellot's book is the best account we have of the day of Lexington and Concord. The actions of each individual who played a conspicuous part in the day's work are minutely traced but Mr. Tourtellot never loses the main thread of his narrative and the wealth of detail he has included gives substance and color to an exciting story.' - J.C. Miller, New York Herald Tribune Book Review

Lexington & Me

Book Description

Lexington & Me serves two purposes. One, it allows people an opportunity to reminisce, to think back to those days when most the shopping people did was downtown, and most towns had at least one movie theater downtown, a drive-in theater on the outskirts of town, a drive-in restaurant where people could eat in their cars, and maybe a bowling alley and a skating rink. The names of those places are different in each town. Names in Lexington's past include department stores Wolf-Wile and Purcell's; dime stores called McCrory's, Woolworth's, S.S. Kresge's, and H.L. Green; the Ben Ali, Strand, and Kentucky movie theaters; a amusement park called Joyland Park; city parks named Castlewood and Woodland; Congress, Eastland and Southland Bowling Lanes; and Scott's Roll-Arena for skating. And while the names of the businesses were different from town to town, the music, movies, and TV shows were the same, no matter where you lived. I look back at those three kinds of entertainment, as well as what kids did with their free time back then, the toys we played with, the games we played. A lot of this book gives people age fifty-five and older a change to think back to the old days, and enjoy the memories of their youth. But the book is also the story of my life. At least, the good parts of it. This book is not a Mommie Dearest. Instead, it is filled with humor, and stories of my life that will entertain most people, regardless of their age. I share the story about the time my teacher wired me in my desk; the time I crawled up the aisle of a train in the middle of the night; the time I fled a school classroom by climbing out a window; the time I had four dates in one weekend; the time I played golf and my ball landed on the green and I was unsure which club to use next; what I wore to my wedding that caused some people to shake their heads and others to smile; and the time a man found me sleeping in the middle of the street in the middle of the night. I share about unusual occupations I've had, and how I became an author who will have written twenty books by the time this year is over.

Game Theory and Exercises

Book Description

Game Theory and Exercises introduces the main concepts of game theory, along with interactive exercises to aid readers’ learning and understanding. Game theory is used to help players understand decision-making, risk-taking and strategy and the impact that the choices they make have on other players; and how the choices of those players, in turn, influence their own behaviour. So, it is not surprising that game theory is used in politics, economics, law and management. This book covers classic topics of game theory including dominance, Nash equilibrium, backward induction, repeated games, perturbed strategie s, beliefs, perfect equilibrium, Perfect Bayesian equilibrium and replicator dynamics. It also covers recent topics in game theory such as level-k reasoning, best reply matching, regret minimization and quantal responses. This textbook provides many economic applications, namely on auctions and negotiations. It studies original games that are not usually found in other textbooks, including Nim games and traveller’s dilemma. The many exercises and the inserts for students throughout the chapters aid the reader’s understanding of the concepts. With more than 20 years’ teaching experience, Umbhauer’s expertise and classroom experience helps students understand what game theory is and how it can be applied to real life examples.
