Life on the Rocky Shores of South-eastern Australia

Book Description

This book is your essential pocket guide to any rocky shore or intertidal rock platform in Victoria, SA, Tasmania or NSW.Adults and children alike love exploring rockpools. Life on the Rocky Shores was first produced in 1980 to help people appreciate these wonderful environments. Now there's a completely revised, fullcolour edition describing 96 intertidal plants and animals. In 2002 the Victorian Government established 13 marine national parks and 11 marine sanctuaries, protecting around 5% of the state's marine areas. However, since then there have been no substantial marine protection initiatives in Victoria. To reclaim our state's position as a leader in marine and coastal conservation both within Australia and internationally, the VNPA believes that the State Government should now commit to protecting more of Victoria's marine areas,in line with current international standards.Climate change, overexploitation of marine resources, marine pollution and other threats and issues make this an even more urgent task.By raising people's awareness of marine environments, this book will help conserve rocky shores and their flora and fauna into the future.

Interactions in the Marine Benthos

Book Description

A comprehensive account of how abiotic and biotic interactions shape patterns of coastal marine biodiversity and ecosystem processes globally.

Field Guide to the Seashores of South-Eastern Australia

Book Description

The types of plants and animals that live on seashores in temperate regions are similar around the globe, but many of the individual species in south-eastern Australia are found only in this region. Field Guide to the Seashores of South-Eastern Australia features colour photographs, descriptions and ecological notes for around 240 species of the more common plants and animals found on rocky, sandy and muddy shores along the coastline from Port Lincoln, South Australia, to the Hawkesbury River, New South Wales, and Tasmania. This guide will allow beachgoers to learn interesting details about the plants and animals they come across, while also having sufficient scientific detail for natural history enthusiasts and biology students to develop their understanding of these shore ecosystems.

The Coast of Australia

Book Description

The Coast of Australia provides the first comprehensive account of the Australian coast.

Sandy Beaches as Ecosystems

Book Description

What sight is more beautiful than a high-energy beach facing lines of rolling white breakers? What battleground is more ferocious than where waves and sand meet? What environment could be more exciting to study than this sandy interface between sea and land? And yet how much do we know about sandy beaches? Open sandy beaches are amongst the most neglected fields of scientific study in the coastal environment. This situation exists despite their great extent along most temperate and tropical coastlines and their value as recreational areas and buffer zones against the sea. The traditional oceanographer does not venture into the surf zone while the terrestrial ecologist stops short at the high water mark. Only a few coastal engineers have grappled with the problem of sand and sediment movement as it influences their construction of harbours and pipelines. The marine biologist on the other hand has regarded estuaries, coral reefs and rocky shores, obviously teeming with life, as more fruitful areas for study than the apparently poor animal life on sandy beaches. Sandy beaches have therefore tended to become a scientific no man's land. Over the last decade this situation has begun to improve. Recent work on high-energy beaches has revealed that they may in fact be rich and productive and fertile areas for study. It has even been suggested that beaches and their adjacent surf zones may constitute viable marine ecosystems.

Monitoring Rocky Shores

Book Description

“Intertidal ecologists have been struggling with how to adequately monitor the tremendous diversity and heterogeneity of rocky shores for decades. Finally three of the most experienced and established people in the field have done it. Monitoring Rocky Shores will serve as THE central reference guide for scientists intent on understanding the complexities of intertidal ecology.”—John Pearse, coauthor of Animals Without Backbones “The incredibly high taxic, morphological, ecological, as well as biotic diversity of rocky shores makes them ideal sites for ecological studies; however this same diversity also presents innumerable challenges. Monitoring Rocky Shores is long overdue in helping investigators tackle these innumerable challenges. This book provides a broad and important introduction to the habitat, the animals, the methods, and the analyses required constructing informed hypotheses and scenarios for life on rocky shores.”—David R. Lindberg, Museum of Paleontology, co-editor of Phylogeny and Evolution of the Mollusca
