The constant need for cost-effective structural forms has led to the increasing use of composite construction, and a substantial amount of research effort is currently being spent in developing techniques for combining concrete and steel effectively. Significant economies in this form of construction have been observed, especially in bridges and building floors. Codes of Practice on composite construction are being revised in the UK and in Europe, in the light of the substantial amount of knowledge that has been generated in recent years. An International Conference organised by the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, University College, Cardiff, UK, with the specific objective of discussing all types of metal structures in an integrated way, provided a forum for the dissemination of new concepts and for reviewing developments; the expectations of the organisers have been amply justified and exceeded by the level of international response to the call for papers. This volume contains 17 papers on composite steel structures, presented at the Conference, many of which were by well-known experts in their respective fields.

The Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Analysis and Design of Bridges held at ~e§me, lzmir, Turkey from 28 June 1982 to 9 July 1982 are contained in the present volume. The Advanced Study Institute was attended by 37 lecturers and participants from 10 different countries. The Organizing Committee consisted of Professors P. Gtilkan, A. C. Scordelis, S. T. Wasti and 9. Yl. lmaz. The guidelines set by NATO for the Advanced Study Institute require it to serve not only as an efficient forum for the dissemination of available advanced knowledge to a selected group of qualified people but also as a platform for the exploration of future research possibilities in the scientific or engineering areas concerned. The main topics covered by the present Advanced Study Institute were the mathematical modelling of bridges for better analysis and the scientific assessment of bridge behaviour for the introduction of improved design procedures. It has been our observation that as a result of the range and depth of the lectures presented and the many informal discussions that took place, ideas became fissile, the stimulus never flagged and many gaps in the engineering knowledge of the participants were "bridged". Here we particularly wish to mention that valuable informal presenta tions of research work were made during the course of the Institute by Drs. Friedrich, Karaesmen, Lamas and Parker.

Development of Design Criteria for Simply Supported Skew Slab-and-girder Bridges

Elastic analyses, using the finite element method, were done on 108 single span skew slab-and-girder bridges. Each structure had 5 girders and stiffnesses were representative of bridges with pretensioned I-girders or steel I-beam. Spans ranged from 40 to 80 ft, girder spacings from 6 to 9 ft, and the skew angle from zero to 60 degrees. The loadings were multiple point loads representing two HS20 AASHTO vehicles, and the loads were positioned to produce maximum bending moments in the girders. Convergence studies to evaluate the precision of the finite element models were also done, and comparisons were made with the results of other studies. An extensive parametric study was done to determine the most important variables and to gain an understanding of the response of the skew bridge. Expressions for the design moments in interior and exterior girders were then developed. These take into account the span and spacing of girders, the stiffness of the girders relative to the slab stiffness, and the angle of skew. The format is the use of the static moment for a girder, with modifications to this moment based on girder span and spacing, slab to girder stiffness ratio, and skew angle. A similar study was done to obtain factors for the calculation of deflections, starting with the deflection of a simple beam.
