Matchmoving has become a standard visual effects procedure for almost every situation where live action materials and CG get combined. It allows virtual and real scenes that have been composited together to seamlessly appear as though they are from the same perspective. This authoritative step-by-step guide from one of the best matchmovers in the business allows you to master this technique that has been called the foundation upon which all VFX work stands. Author Erica Hornung (sr. matchmover for Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Matrix: Revolutions, and more) imparts her techniques, tips, and wisdom from the trenches that will have you matchmoving like a true professional in no time. Lessons in the most popular matchmoving software (Maya, Boujou, and others) are included, as well as tips and techniques for surveying on set, dolly moves, and operating nodal cameras. Individual chapters dedicated to object and character matchmoves show you how to matchmove for shadow casting, adding weapons and other objects, focusing on center of gravity, as well as complete CG character support. The companion DVD includes Quicktime examples of techniques shown in the book, as well as project files that allow you to master these techniques yourself by working alongside the lessons featured in the text.

Presenting simple and cost-effective solutions for maintaining and improving mealtime abilities, this book discusses the practical aspects of eating and drinking as part of person-centred dementia care. Due to cognitive decline, changes in mealtime abilities can lead to malnutrition and related issues for people with dementia, alongside feelings of powerlessness and isolation. This research-informed book explains how to make the most of mealtimes for increased nutritional intake, socialising, and food enjoyment, in a range of care settings. The book covers topics such as the physical act of eating and drinking, creating a comfortable and friendly dining environment, using appropriate tableware, and dealing with common issues such as problems with swallowing and choking.

Eighteenth-century consumers of the Qing and Ottoman empires had access to an increasingly diverse array of goods, from home furnishings to fashionable clothes and new foodstuffs. While this tendency was of shorter duration and intensity in the Ottoman world, some urbanites of the sultans’ realm did enjoy silks, coffee, and Chinese porcelain. By contrast, a vibrant consumer culture flourished in Qing China, where many consumers flaunted their fur coats and indulged in gourmet dining. Living the Good Life explores how goods furthered the expansion of social networks, alliance-building between rulers and regional elites, and the expression of elite, urban, and gender identities. The scholarship in the present volume highlights the recently emerging “material turn” in Qing and Ottoman historiographies and provides a framework for future research. Since the early 19th century when the Romanticists developed the literary theme, interest in the subject of our place in nature grown enormously. The author’s interest was especially piqued one colorful autumn when he picked up an old book at an auction, The Witchery of Archery by Maurice Thompson. Its subject is the old archery of wood bows and arrows. It leads the author to examine the connection between making a wood bow and finding his own place. His crafting brought forward an entirely unanticipated flood of psychological material. He suffered a fit of discontent. He became morose and restless. He restudied his Jung. He had dreams. He underwent a transformation. Herein he writes of his change, of crafting the wood bow, of primitive artistry, of kaleidoscoping personae wherein artist and hunter are, as in the ancient past, indistinguishable. He has used the ideas brought forth by bowmaking to approach the idea of hunting, but he has arrived at a conclusion different from that held by the dominant sport hunting community. One of the earliest and still most prevalent influences in his thinking is Aldo Leopold. Leopold’s ideas, as well as those of Thoreau and Lao Tsu, are reformulated in this book to suit archers and hunters. It will be of interest to any lover of those thinkers, and to hunters, archers, outdoors-oriented people, and peripherally to anyone who is interested in personal transformation.
