Logic at the Crossroads (set)

Book Description

Proof, Computation and Agency Proof, Computation and Agency: Logic at the Cross Roads provides an overview of Logic and its relationship with other disciplines, and some of the emerging areas in terms. The volume brings out an inspiring paradigm, called 'Social Software', the study of patterns of social interaction by means of techniques from logic and computer science. Besides, it demonstrates how an extended view of logic can join forces with the social sciences, game theory or social choice theory, in studying patterns and procedures in social agency, and systematizing this field. Moreover, the study of Logic-Language- Cognition connection forms an important component of the fresh approach the volume. Finally, the volume explores the nature of the contributions made in Indian tradition in logic by demonstrating that the validity of inference is not a purely formal notion and logic could be placed in the context of epistemology and the Indian scientific tradition. The book takes up Indian logic in its connections with philosophical epistemology and the philosophy of science and exhibits how topics ran naturally into each other. Games, Norms and Reasons The explanation as to why logic is perceived as standing at the crossroads has to do with fact that in the recent past logic, in relationship with several academic disciplines closely related to it, has been a catalyst in giving rise to new research programmes or even innovative academic fields. Games, Norms, and Reasons: Logic at the Crossroads provides an overview of Logic and its relationship with other disciplines, and some of the emerging areas in terms of leading articles by pioneers in the field. The first part of this is devoted to exploring aspects of norms, reasons, preferences and beliefs in human agency, human interaction or structured groups, sometimes using the logic of games or by developing novel frameworks, concepts and ideas appropriate for such exploration. The papers in the second part of the volume are dedicated to Rohit Parikh who embodies some of the new trends in the explorations mentioned above that are not only seminal, but shaped the direction of a field, sometimes even creating it.

Society and Psyche

Book Description

Providing interpretations and drawing critically from classical and modern social theory, post-structuralism, and psychoanalytic theory, this original study offers an alternative way of thinking about the social and the individual. It offers critical analyses of, among others, Marx, Giddens, Bourdieu, Derrida, Laclau and Mouffe, Castoriadis, Freud and modern psychoanalytic theorists, and considers their roles in advancing our present-day conceptualization of the social and the self. In theorizing that behaviour is both socially determined and autonomous, it avoids the impasses of either individualist or structuralist approaches.

Crossroads Modernism

Beyond the Crossroads

Book Description

The devil is the most charismatic and important figure in the blues tradition. He's not just the music's namesake ("the devil's music"), but a shadowy presence who haunts an imagined Mississippi crossroads where, it is claimed, Delta bluesman Robert Johnson traded away his soul in exchange for extraordinary prowess on the guitar. Yet, as scholar and musician Adam Gussow argues, there is much more to the story of the devil and the blues than these cliched understandings. In this groundbreaking study, Gussow takes the full measure of the devil's presence. Working from original transcriptions of more than 125 recordings released during the past ninety years, Gussow explores the varied uses to which black southern blues people have put this trouble-sowing, love-wrecking, but also empowering figure. The book culminates with a bold reinterpretation of Johnson's music and a provocative investigation of the way in which the citizens of Clarksdale, Mississippi, managed to rebrand a commercial hub as "the crossroads" in 1999, claiming Johnson and the devil as their own.

Reasoning with Rough Sets

Book Description

This book explores reasoning with rough sets by developing a granularity-based framework. It begins with a brief description of the rough set theory, then examines selected relations between rough set theory and non-classical logics including modal logic. In addition, it develops a granularity-based framework for reasoning in which various types of reasoning can be formalized. The book will be of interest to all researchers whose work involves Artificial Intelligence, databases and/or logic.

Symbolic and Quantitative Approaches to Reasoning with Uncertainty

Book Description

Since 1991, the European Conference on Symbolic and Quantitative Appr- ches to Reasoning with Uncertainty (ECSQARU) has been a major forum for advances in the theory and practice of reasoning and decision making under - certainty. The scope of ECSQARU is wide and includes, but is not limited to, fundamental issues, representation, inference, learning, and decision making in qualitative and numeric paradigms. The ?rst ECSQARU conference (1991) was held in Marseilles, and since then it has been held in Granada (1993), Fribourg (1995), Bonn (1997), London (1999) and Toulouse (2001). This volume contains the papers that were presented at ECSQARU 2003, held at Aalborg University, Denmark, from July 2 to July 5, 2003. The papers went through a rigorous reviewing process: three program committee members reviewed each paper monitored by an area chair, who made a ?nal recomm- dation to the program co-chairs. In addition to the regular presentations, the technical program for ECSQARU 2003 also included talks by three distingu- hedinvitedspeakers:DidierDubois,PhilippeSmetsandJeroenVermunt.Didier Dubois and Jeroen Vermunt also contributed to this volume with papers on the subjects of their talks.
