The Life of Reason in an Age of Terrorism

Book Description

With The Life of Reason in an Age of Terrorism, Charles Padrón and Kris Skowroński (editors) gather together a broad assortment of contributions that address the germaneness of George Santayana’s (1863-1952) social and political thought to the world of the early twenty-first century in general, and specifically to the phenomenon of terrorism. The essays treat a broad range of philosophical and historical concerns: the life of reason, the philosophy of the everyday, fanaticism, liberalism, barbarism, egoism, and relativism. The essays reflect a wide range of viewpoints and perspectives, but all coalesce around discussions of how Santayana’s thought fits in with and enhances an understanding of both our challenging times, and our uncertain future. Contributors are: Cayetano Estébanez, Matthew Caleb Flamm, Nóra Horváth, Jacquelyn Ann Kegley, Till Kinzel, Katarzyna Kremplewska, John Lachs, José Beltrán Llavador, Eduardo Mendieta, Daniel Moreno Moreno, Luka Nikolic, Charles Padrón, Giuseppe Patella, Daniel Pinkas, Herman Saatkamp, Jr., Matteo Santarelli, Krzysztof Piotr Skowroński and Andrés Tutor.

My Life By Me And My Poetry In-Between

Book Description

My Life by Me and My Poetry In-Between By: Marty Slain (Mykos) My life’s had a lot of laughter and love But also tears of frustration and sorrow, A few regrets and way too many whys But I still look forward to my tomorrow In June 2015, at the age of 60, Marty Slain (Mykos) decided to start this book. Her life has been full of ups and downs, challenges faced and overcome, love lost and found, and friends and family encouraged her to share her story. In poetry and prose, Marty spins her unique tale and hopes to encourage others with her positive spirit. Part of a large family, Marty grew up surrounded by faith and love. At eighteen, she discovered she was pregnant and married the baby’s father. The young family tried to make it work. But when her husband became abusive, Marty left him. She was repeatedly unlucky in love, but found happiness in her three children and career in construction and restoration. She and her siblings supported each other through divorces and deaths. Marty had fun in the good times – plenty of dancing, rich friendships, and a wonderful man. When darkness came, however, she had to fight to keep the light in her life. Watching her children face their own struggles in relationships and parenting brought both joy and heartache. In the end, it’s been a wonderful journey of family and friends who have inspired and challenged her. Poems celebrate the love she has lived as well as soberly reflecting the dark times in her life. Sensitive and spirited, Marty’s words will comfort and encourage you. Laughter is important, family is everything, and faith will always bring you through.

Nation’S Historical Sense and Ecclesiality for Life

Book Description

The Book is about the history of struggle for respect of human dignity and freedom against man-made darkness in which I.F.I. is one expression. This book aims to make people see that nation's human struggle is one venue to see the human design, that by it, man is one manifestation of the great Designer/Creator. The hope through it is that 'human history' should be respected and sanctity be preserved; and not be altered by 'propaganda' and lies, instead, record of actuality and of truth in which by honesty liberates the oppressed and the oppressor. Then, we can affirm the truths of Jesus for life. With all "sects" of prosperity, self and of claims today Christianity seems reduced into selective Bible-ism, conversation in the table between pro-imperialist and nationalistic, heavenward and earthward is needed to make sense of Christianity here and now. Jesus said 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, spirit and strength', man's total being cannot pretend to be spirit only, cannot dictate God to be for spirit and heaven only. 'Historical sense' shaped ecclesiality for the whole global community of all race.

Bald Eagle Vision 2

Book Description

In this novel, Rory Flynn, son of Matt Flynn, the co-inventor of the Red Box Antigravity Device which revolutionized global transportation, is the billionaire grandfather of Nolan Flynn. Grandpa takes his 17-year-old grandson on a week-long tour of the national capital region. Their Turbopod multi-vehicle (T-Pod) carries them to key sites around the Chesapeake Bay. The journey begins and ends at the family home, Beauvista, overlooking Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia. The purpose of the tour is to educate the young man about the many “ISMs” like Americanism, Federalism, Racism, Socialism and Communism. In addition to the Capitol, the duo visits museums, galleries, monuments, golf courses and French restaurants. Grandpa wants his grandson to “smell the roses along the way.” The youth has a rude awakening during a visit to a Middle School where the ugliness of the white versus black racism is taught. The role of the Teacher’s Unions in brainwashing the students with racism in order to divide the country for the Socialist government is clear. In addition, Nolan gets a lifetime lesson about how the Chinese Communists have infiltrated American society in preparation for a complete take-over. In the end, Nolan realizes why the Flynn Family has been dedicated to the fight against Socialism and Communism for decades. The tour convinces the savvy youth to take up the torch for American Patriotism. He takes pride in his new vision, much like that of the Bald Eagle, to dedicate his life to the fight against the ugly “ISMs” attempting to end our Democracy and Free-Enterprise economy and turn our country into a Third-World state controlled by Beijing.

"God Is Dead" and I Don't Feel So Good Myself

Book Description

In this pertinent and engaging volume leading Christian philosophers, theologians, and writers from all over the denominational map explode the black-and-white binaries that characterize both sides of the New Atheism debate. They transcend the self-assured shouting matches of this latest expression of the culture wars by engaging in rigorous, polychromatic Christian reflection that considers the extent to which the atheistic critique-both new and old-might help the church move toward a more mature faith, authentic spirituality, charitable witness, and peaceable practice. With generous openness and ferocious wit, this collection of essays, interviews, memoir, poetry, and visual art-including contributions from leading intellectuals, activists, and artists such as Stanley Hauerwas, Charles Taylor, John Milbank, Stanley Fish, Luci Shaw, Paul Roorda, Merold Westphal, and D. Stephen Long-provides substantive analysis, incisive critique, and a hopeful way forward for Christian dialog with atheist voices. Contributors: Andy Barnes, Peter M. Candler Jr., Becky Crook, Brad Davis, Courtney Druz, Stanley Fish, Brandi Gentry's, Larry Gilman, Stanley Hauerwas, Robert Inchausti, Ronald A. Kuipers, D. Stephen Long, Charles T. Reframing Russian Modernism

Book Description

Presenting a multifaceted portrait of modernist culture in Russia, an array of distinguished scholars shows how artists and writers in the early twentieth century engaged with politics, science, and religion. At a time when many Russian social institutions looked to the past, modernist arts powerfully amplified a gamut of new ideas about individual and collective transformation. Expanding upon prior studies that focus more specifically on literary manifestations of the movement, Reframing Russian Modernism features original research that ranges broadly, from political aesthetics to Darwinism to yoga. These unique complementary perspectives counter reductionism of any kind, integrating the study of Russian modernism into the larger body of humanistic scholarship devoted to modernity.
