Explore the fascinating field of magnetism with this interactive picture book for young learners. Magnetism is all around us--even the earth is a giant magnet. A world without magnets would be a world without cell phones, computers, and more! Trusted children's nonfiction author David A. Adler covers the basics of magnetism, including compasses, for aspiring scientists. Hands-on experiments are smartly woven into the narrative. Want to test out the strength of a magnet? All you need is a bowl of water and some paper clips! Anna Raff's lively art illustrates scientific concepts clearly, with the added fun of two siblings and their dog exploring and learning together. Back matter includes a glossary that defines such terms as attraction, pole, electromagnetism, force, and more. Suggested activities on how to make your own magnet are also included. Classroom Connections brings math, language arts, and science together around a common skill. This book for first graders covers vowel sounds, synonyms and antonyms, homophones, reading comprehension, addition, subtraction, measurement, and critical thinking. --The Classroom Connections series provides math, language arts, and science practice for children in kindergarten to grade 3. Each page ties three subject areas together around a common skill, giving children a fresh way to look at important concepts. Children are also provided with extension activities, tips, and hints related to each skill to encourage additional learning and real-world application.

The manufacture of silicon single crystals is one of the most important processes in the information technology industry. This book explains the details of liquid metal convection, providing a guide for the elegant operation and control of Czochralski crystal growth, including the effect of magnetic control. Also covered is the newly emerging research field of the application of strong magnetic field using a superconducting magnet. Model equations for the phenomena in the magnetic field are treated in detail, which will be of much use to researchers and engineers in the field. The coverage includes the effect of the Lorentz force in materials processing and the magnetic force of recently developed superconducting magnets. It examines heat, mass and momentum transfer in electro-conducting and non-conducting fluids under normal and very strong magnetic fields. The book also treats the Czochralski single crystal growth process and continuous steel casting process as the most important current applications of magnetic fields. Numerical approaches are compared with the corresponding experimental measurements.
