Love for Sale

Book Description

Love for Sale is the first study to examine the ubiquity of commercial sex in Russian literary and artistic production from the nineteenth century through the fin de siècle. Colleen Lucey offers a compelling account of how the figure of the sex worker captivated the public's imagination through depictions in fiction and fine art, bringing to light how imperial Russians grappled with the issue of sexual commerce. Studying a wide range of media—from little-known engravings that circulated in newspapers to works of canonical fiction—Lucey shows how writers and artists used the topic of prostitution both to comment on women's shifting social roles at the end of tsarist rule and to express anxieties about the incursion of capitalist transactions in relations of the heart. Each of the book's chapters focus on a type of commercial sex, looking at how the street walker, brothel worker, demimondaine, kept woman, impoverished bride, and madam traded in sex as a means to acquire capital. Lucey argues that prostitution became a focal point for imperial Russians because it signaled both the promises of modernity and the anxieties associated with Westernization. Love for Sale integrates historical analysis, literary criticism, and feminist theory and conveys how nineteenth-century beliefs about the "fallen woman" drew from medical, judicial, and religious discourse on female sexuality. Lucey invites readers to draw a connection between rhetoric of the nineteenth century and today's debate on sex workers' rights, highlighting recent controversies concerning Russian sex workers to show how imperial discourse is recycled in the twenty-first century.

Welcome to Cobble Hill. In this eclectic Brooklyn neighborhood, private storms brew amongst four married couples and their children. There’s ex-groupie Mandy, so underwhelmed by motherhood and her current physical state that she fakes a debilitating disease to get the attention of her skateboarding, ex-boyband member husband Stuart. There’s the unconventional new school nurse, Peaches, on whom Stuart has an unrequited crush, and her disappointing husband Greg, who wears noise-cancelling headphones—everywhere. A few blocks away, Roy, a well-known, newly transplanted British novelist, has lost the thread of his next novel and his marriage to indefatigable Wendy. Around the corner, Tupper, the nervous, introverted industrial designer with a warehouse full of prosthetic limbs struggles to pin down his elusive artist wife Elizabeth. A Gentleman for Christmas

Book Description

Stir-it-up-Sunday only happens once a year, but a grandmother’s Christmas pudding doesn’t tempt Cecily’s appetite half as much as an appealing neighbor. Her deepest secret is safe until she whispers sugar plum nothings in her sleep, and awkwardly, someone overhears. A relationship doesn’t seem possible, but when it becomes apparent that their feelings are mutual, it’s not only class and social status hindering a relationship, but also one stubborn English father. Logan Campbell, a skilled yet lowly veterinary surgeon, has a talent as an animal whisperer. Popular with the farmers and one English lady, his sentiments can’t administer common sense to the parental obstacle standing in his way. He’s willing to risk it all to secure his heart’s desire, even if it means singing in the church choir. But when a racehorse becomes seriously ill, the ensuing challenge tests his patience and skill. He’ll have to pull out all the stops to secure their future. Does a veterinary surgeon have the practical knowledge to prevent a tragedy? Will a father accept his daughter’s heartfelt wishes? A Christmas carol and a little lady luck could make this season brighter.
