Make Christianity Great Again

Book Description

If you're a Christian, this book will change your life. It addresses a problem that has always troubled you. If Christianity is true, why do so many people disbelieve it, why is it losing its hold over the world, and why is it possible to imagine a world of the future with no Christians at all? Christianity is being attacked on all fronts, and seems close to total defeat. The future does not look Christian. It looks the opposite. How can that be if Christianity is the truth of reality? You, as a faithful Christian, are enraged by the way the world has turned against Christianity, and you know the world is lost if it does not turn back to the Truth, revealed in Jesus Christ. The most important idea in Christianity is the Second Coming. Christ is coming back. That's when all the unbelievers will be made to eat their words and beg for forgiveness. The question is this – why hasn't Jesus already returned? What is he waiting for? The answer ought to be obvious. We aren't waiting for him. He is waiting for us. Jesus isn't the hold-up. We are. The First Coming was when Jesus appeared on earth to show us what to do. The Second Coming happens when we have actually done it! But we haven't done it – nowhere near – and that's the whole problem. Christianity reeks of failure. After two thousand years of Christianity, why isn't the world saved? What has gone wrong? The answer is obvious. Christianity has been sabotaged. Its enemies have warped and distorted it. Satan is the Father of Lies. His greatest lie was sewn into Christianity to corrupt Christ's message. That corruption must be undone, so that people see true Christianity, the Christianity of its First Age, when Christianity, as a pure movement of the ordinary people, the oppressed people, the godly people, swept the world, even reaching the doors of the imperial palace of Rome. But that's when everything went wrong. When those doors opened, it was Satan who stood there. It was Satan who welcomed in Christianity and turned it into a message of earthly power, not of love and truth. You all know this. You all want to know what to do about it. How can the Devil be purged from Christianity?

Make Christianity Great Again

Book Description

Christianity's greatness has diminished, that is, Christianity historically and culturally considered in the West. By contrast, the greatness of the Christian Faith objectively understood has not lessened: the Lord Jesus Christ and his word and the Cross and resurrection, for example, are just as great today as they ever were. But the Faith at is practiced in the West and particularly as it influences what we nowadays call "public" life is at a low ebb. This diminution has occurred before historically both in the West as well as in the rest of the world, and it has been recovered. A contribution toward that recovery in our own time is the chief objective of the small book.

Making Christianity Manly Again

Book Description

A look inside one of America's most politically consequential churches Mark Driscoll, the founding pastor of Seattle's Mars Hill Church, indelibly impacted American evangelicalism. Driscoll's brash, authoritarian, and profanity-laden leadership grew Mars Hill Church into one of the fastest growing, most innovative, and most influential churches in the country--not an easy task in one of America's most secular cities. Driscoll's gender theology put men at the forefront of American Christianity, rebranding Jesus from a "gay hippie in a dress" to a sword-carrying, "robe-dipped-in-blood" warrior. This type of rhetoric paved the way for evangelicals' embrace of hypermasculine Christianity, priming the pump for their unprecedented support of Donald Trump in the 2016 and 2020 Presidential elections. Making Christianity Manly Again places Driscoll's gender theology in its social and historical contexts and analyzes the contemporary social patterns that explain how a hypermasculine theology helped create a megachurch empire. By addressing the rhetoric of Driscoll's movement through his sermons, along with narratives from former Mars Hill Church members, sociologist Jennifer McKinney leads us to a better understanding of the dynamics of the evangelical impulse to reclaim and glorify men's power. These dynamics, as McKinney shows, have fueled a growing Christian nationalist movement, with enormous implications for religion and politics in America.

Preaching to Those Walking Away

Book Description

Preaching to Those Walking Away will help pastors adapt to a world of YouTube, TED Talks, and video marketing in which traditional preaching styles no longer feel authoritative, engaging, or compelling. N. Graham Standish has long been passionate about reaching out to those who call themselves "spiritual but not religious." Determined to help the church connect with them, he shares methods he has tested, refined, and proven effective--approaches to preaching typically not taught in seminaries. Rather than grounding preaching in traditional homiletical theories and practices, Standish integrates insights from postmodernism, generational theory, multiple-intelligences theory, marketing, communications theory, brain/neurological research, counseling, spiritual formation, TED Talk presentations, motivational theory, and the history of communication styles. Standish developed his ideas about preaching during more than two decades as senior pastor of a healthy, growing congregation that consistently attracted people who had walked away from Christianity and church. More than half a century ago, Canadian communications theorist Marshall McLuhan said, "The medium is the message." But mainline Christianity has been slow to adapt its message to new mediums. The population at large will not adapt to traditional Christian ways of preaching, however, so Standish helps pastors understand the thinking of those walking away and shows preachers how to adapt their thinking about their craft, instead of demanding that those walking away adapt to ours.

Hell

Book Description

Hell on earth is real. The toxic fusion of big oil, Evangelical Christianity, and white supremacy has ignited a worldwide inferno, more phantasmagoric than anything William Blake could dream up and more cataclysmic than we can fathom. Escaping global warming hell, this revelatory book shows, requires a radical, mystical marriage of Christianity and biology that awakens a future beyond white male savagery. Timothy Morton argues that there is an unexpected yet profound relationship between religion and ecology that can guide a planet-scale response to the climate crisis. Spiritual and mystical feelings have a deep resonance with ecological thinking, and together they provide the resources environmentalism desperately needs in this time of climate emergency. Morton finds solutions in a radical revaluation of Christianity, furnishing ecological politics with a language of mercy and forgiveness that draws from Christian traditions without bringing along their baggage. They call for a global environmental movement that fuses ecology and mysticism and puts race and gender front and center. This nonviolent resistance can stage an all-out assault on the ultimate Satanic mill: the concept of master and slave, manifesting today in white supremacy, patriarchy, and environmental destruction. Passionate, erudite, and playful, Hell takes readers on a full-color journey into the contemporary underworld—and offers a surprising vision of salvation.
