When Becky learns of the possibility that she and her brothers might be sent to an orphanage, she determines to keep the family together. The year is 1902. Becky and her family live in a small town in North Carolina. While her widowed mama toils at the cotton mill, Becky cares for her two younger brothers. Becky goes from house to house asking for work, and finally gets a job at Joyner Farms. Becky soon realizes her wages are not enough and drastic action must be taken, or she and her brothers will be separated from Mama. One night Becky dreams that Mama is getting married. She believes God is telling her to find a husband for Mama. Becky eagerly embraces the role of matchmaker. What kinds of trouble will her match-making cause? Will she find the right man for Mama, or was it only a dream after all? Juanita Wells retired after having worked in the insurance industry for thirty-nine years. Throughout those thirty-nine years, she passionately taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and Children's Church. She does not plan to retire from sharing her love of God with children, whether in a class or in one of her books. She is married and makes her home in Florida. The stories Juanita heard from her grandmother and mother are the basis for many of the events in this book. The threat of the orphanage faced by thirteen-year-old Becky was a reality to her grandmother, while sparrow pie was a meal enjoyed by her mother during the 1930 depression years.
