Biological Control in Latin America and the Caribbean

Book Description

The book summarizes the history of biological control in Latin America and the Caribbean. Few publications provide historical detail and the records are, therefore, fragmented until now. By bringing information together in this book, we offer a more complete picture of important developments in biological control on this continent. There are a wealth of text, tables and references about the history of such projects, and which were succesful and which failed. This will help plan future biocontrol projects. An overview is provided of the current situation in biological control for many Latin American and Caribbean countries, revealing an astonishing level of practical biological control applied in the regio, making it the largest area under biological control worldwide. The final part describes new developments and speculates about the future of biological control in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Biodiversidad y manejo de plagas en agroecosistemas

Book Description

Quinoa

Book Description

Quinoa is an ancient grain that has grown in popularity in recent years. It has been known as a good source of both protein and fiber. As the demand for quinoa increases a comprehensive and up-to-date reference on the biology and production of the crop is essential. Quinoa: Improvement and Sustainable Production brings together authors from around the world to provide a complete assessment of the current state of global quinoa research and production. Topics covered include quinoa history and culture, genomics and breeding, agronomy, nutrition, marketing, and end-uses. The book focuses in particular on the emerging role of quinoa in providing increased food security to smallholder farmers and communities throughout the world. Quinoa will interest quinoa researchers, producers, crop scientists, agronomists, and plant geneticists, as well as advanced students working with this important grain.

Integrated Pest Management and Pest Control

Book Description

Integrated Pest Management is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. Its programs use current and comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interactions with the environment. This information, in combination with available pest control methods, is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.

Beyond IPM: Introduction to the Theory of Holistic Pest Management

Book Description

About 15 years ago, we asked ourselves why the methods developed by the research institutions for the management of pests were almost not used by small landholder farmers. It seemed obvious to us that conventional pest control –called “Integrated Pest Management”– was based on a reductionist approach. In reviewing the literature on the subject, we found that our concern was not new or unique. The agreement of some authors with our ideas reinforced our efforts to find a holistic approach to pest management. We took two central ideas to develop the holistic approach: First, pest management actions must put the farmer at the center of the system. Second, pest management must consider not only both pests but the other important components of the system in question. This approach based on the farmers and the systems in which they are immersed, is called “Holistic Pest Management” or HPM. In this book, I present the philosophy and practice of HPM, a new paradigm of pest management.

Agroecología y sustentabilidad

Book Description

Areawide Pest Management

Book Description

This book aims (1) to lay out the historical underpinnings of the areawide pest (including weeds, plant and stored grain insect pests) management (AWPM) and to highlight current activity in the field; (2) to delve into concepts that have direct impact on the successful implementation of AWPM, which include: (i) biological and ecological concepts important for understanding the dynamics of populations in spatially heterogeneous environments; (ii) the critical role of inter-agency and multidisciplinary interactions in the development and implementation of AWPM programmes, which are often complex inter-agency and intergovernmental endeavours; (iii) the roles of modelling, meteorology and databases in AWPM programmes which, by their nature, are information intensive; and (iv) the importance of economic and sociological evaluation in successful AWPM implementation; and (3) to compile recent case examples of pest management programmes that have used the AWPM approach. A survey in presented on a wide variety of programmes developed for protecting agricultural and natural resource systems and which use a wide range of pest management tactics.
