These volumes primarily contain tanka or "short poems" of thirty-one syllables. This style of poetry dates to over twenty centuries and was written throughout the Japanese Empire. The anthology includes one thousand ancient and modern tanka. Some were selected not for their instrinsic value but for the interesting stories connected to them which the author felt illustrated "national traits".
