Materia Medica and Pharmacy (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Materia Medica and Pharmacy In revising White's Materia Medica and Therapeutics to bring it into harmony with the United States pharmacopmia so much additional matter has been introduced into the five American editions that it seemed advisable to re-write the book. The forthcoming revision of the Pharmac0paeia has given the Opportunity. The many advances in the subjects here treated have necessitated the division of the work into two distinct parts; this, the first, being devoted to Materia Medica and Pharmacy and the second to Pharmacology and Therapeutics. It is hoped that this natural separation of the subjects will be acceptable to the physician and the student. In the present work full atten tion is given to pharmaceutical processes, to the various kinds of preparations, with their dosage, and to the art of prescrib ing; after which the description of remedies is taken up in detail. The list of therapeutic agents is divided into two main parts, under the heads of Inorganic and Organic Materia Medica, and the general classification adopted is one based on the grouping of the articles according to the class and chemical division or natural order to which each belongs. In order to make the book more complete, condensed descriptions of the action and therapeutic use of all the remedies have been ap pended. Elements of Materia Medica and Pharmacy

Book Description

Excerpt from Elements of Materia Medica and Pharmacy: Two Volumes in One IN composing the following work, the object which I princi pally had in View was to render more useful the lectures I deliver, on the subjects of which it treats. I could not doubt of the advantages to be derived from an outline which pre sents to the student the general arrangement of the course, and a summary of the leading facts and principles which it is designed to illustrate. And I deemed this the more necessary, as the classification of the Materia Medica, which I have adopted, and some of the views of the operations of medicines, are different from those which have hitherto been proposed. A Text-Book of Materia Medica and Pharmacy

Book Description

Excerpt from A d104-Book of Materia Medica and Pharmacy: For Medical Students As the authors have not found a book on Pharmacy and Materia Mediea, such as seemed to meet the needs of the students attending the course of instruction given in these subjects in the University of Toronto, they have felt it necessary to undertake the preparation of a short text-book. Their reluctance to undertake the preparation of another medical text-book has led them to carefully examine the books upon these subjects now upon the market; yet none seem to fulfil the requirements that they considered essential. Many of the books dealing with this work contain as well Pharmacology and Therapeutics, which are often not up-to-date nor accurate, or if they be accurate the Pharmacy and Materia Mediea have been neglected. As there are good text-books of Pharmacology, the authors have considered it inadvisable to include any pharmacology whatever. The other texts upon the market, which deal with the pharmacy in an adequate manner are too often written by American authors and deal largely with the American Pharmacopoeia. The arrangement of the sections in many books dealing with the materia mediea is also often the authors consider unfortunate. The classification of the drugs according to their botanical, mineral, or animal origin is no longer of importance. Nor does a pharmacological classification, where so much overlapping occurs, furnish a basis for an arrangement useful for reference purposes. These considerations have forced the authors to compile this little book and they hope that it will prove an aid to many medical students in gaining the necessary knowledge of a now too much neglected subject. The following works have been much made use of. The British Pharmacopoeia; The British Pharmaceutical Codex; Squires Companion to the British Pharmacopoeia; Ruddiman, Incompatibilities in Prescriptions: Elbome, the Elements of Practical Pharmacy and Dispensing: The Art of Dispensing; Fantus, Prescription Writing and Pharmacy: Bruce, Materia Mediea and Therapeutics; The American Pharmacopoeia. A Text-Book of Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A d104-Book of Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics The book is the fruit of some twenty years' experience in teach ing therapeutics and clinical medicine, and many years of private and institutional practice. It has been my effort to embody as much as possible of this experience in a condensed, carefully classified, and usable form. Above everything else, I desire this book to be practical rather than theoretical. It is important not only that the student should acquire the largest amount pos sible of knowledge of the remedies which he expects to use in the practice of medicine, but also that this knowledge should be systematically and logically arranged, so that it may become immediately available. I believe that the classification which I have adopted particularly lends itself to that end, and that it will greatly facilitate the study of this important branch of medicine. While the needs of the student have been kept in the fore ground, I have not forgotten the demands which are made upon it by the practising physician. I have, therefore, endeavored to make the subject-matter as complete and as detailed as the size of such a work will permit, and to give Special prominence to the therapeutic sections. In this field I have drawn largely upon my own experience, not forgetting the larger mine of current medical literature.more or less widespread employment, have been accorded a place. Book Description

Excerpt from A Text-Book of Materia Medica, Therapeutics and Pharmacology Thanks to careful and competent training among pharmacists, the skilful preparation and dispensing Of drugs relieve the physi cian of much responsibility; yet he Should be keenly sensible Of the fact that the larger share Of public confidence is reposed in him, and by diligent study of the subject endeavor to command the minutiae Of pharmacology, holding himself morally accountable for errors quite possible in the druggist's dispensary. It may not be irrelevant to add that in all medical procedure a sympathetic yet perfectly controlled nature, ready tact, and sterling common sense are cardinal requisites to professional triumph, it being gene rally true, as was long since Observed by Hufeland, that success ful treatment requires only one-third science and two-thirds savoir faire.
