Strategies to Cope with Risks of Uncertain Water Supply in Spate Irrigation Systems

Book Description

Flood based irrigation in particular spate irrigation relies on variable flood scenarios occurring every year. Management of spate flood for spate irrigation must cope with the variability and uncertainty of water supply. Coping with water supply risks is often the only way to harness the opportunities for a productive use of water in arid environment. Integrating and strengthening community responses into irrigation policies and improvement plans could ensure sustainable and productive spate irrigated systems that can achieve food security for the poor population. This research analyses and evaluates risks and coping strategies developed by farming communities in the Gash spate irrigation system in Sudan, Eastern Africa. The research has synthesized different coping strategies developed by farmers, water user associations and water managers to cope with low, high and untimely flood risks. The research provide different frameworks that can assist with the identification of risk sources, pathways and propagation as well as evaluation of locally developed strategies at field, secondary and intake systems. The findings of this study contribute to scarce knowledge on spate irrigation system and provide scientifically sound and evidence-based insights to aid informed policy and decision making to improve productivity and sustainability of the spate irrigation systems.

Symmetry and Electromagnetic Interaction of Fields with Multi-spin

Book Description

This book deals with fields which possess different spins so, that there is an additional internal symmetry of such schemes. The main feature of theories with multi-spin is that transformations of the Lorentz and internal symmetry groups do not commute each other. So, parameters of the group are tensors but not scalars as in the more common-gauge theories. This kind of symmetry is also different from supersymmetry where group parameters are not scalars. The difference is that in this case the algebra of generators of the symmetry is closed without adding the generators of the Poincaré group. Consideration of schemes of fields with multi-spin possess some attractive features and avoid some difficulties but the price of this is the presence of the indefinite metric. It should be noted that some quantum theories of gravity also require the introduction of an indefinite metric. The localisation of parameters of the internal symmetry group leads to the gauge fields and field interactions. In Part II solutions are found for equations for particles with different spins in external classical and quantified electromagnetic fields, as well as the interaction of fields with multi-spin with external electromagnetic fields of different configurations.

A Second Course in Linear Algebra

Book Description

This textbook for senior undergraduate and first year graduate-level courses in linear algebra and analysis, covers linear algebra, multilinear algebra, canonical forms of matrices, normal linear vector spaces and inner product spaces. These topics provide all of the prerequisites for graduate students in mathematics to prepare for advanced-level work in such areas as algebra, analysis, topology and applied mathematics.

Mathematics for Physicists

Book Description

This textbook is a comprehensive introduction to the key disciplines of mathematics - linear algebra, calculus, and geometry - needed in the undergraduate physics curriculum. Its leitmotiv is that success in learning these subjects depends on a good balance between theory and practice. Reflecting this belief, mathematical foundations are explained in pedagogical depth, and computational methods are introduced from a physicist's perspective and in a timely manner. This original approach presents concepts and methods as inseparable entities, facilitating in-depth understanding and making even advanced mathematics tangible. The book guides the reader from high-school level to advanced subjects such as tensor algebra, complex functions, and differential geometry. It contains numerous worked examples, info sections providing context, biographical boxes, several detailed case studies, over 300 problems, and fully worked solutions for all odd-numbered problems. An online solutions manual for all even-numbered problems will be made available to instructors.

Determinants and Matrices

Book Description

This book contains a detailed guide to determinants and matrices in algebra. It offers an in-depth look into this area of mathematics, and it is highly recommended for those looking for an introduction to the subject. "Determinants and Matrices" is not to be missed by collectors of vintage mathematical literature. Contents include: "Linear Equations and Transformations", "The Notation of Matrices", "Matrices, Row and Column Vectors, Sealers", "The Operations of Matrix Algebra", "Matrix Pre- and Postmultiplication", "Product of Three or More Matrices", "Transposition of Rows and Columns", "Transpose of a Product: Reversal Rule", etc. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive.
