This volume grew out of a series of preprints which were written and circulated - tween 1993 and 1994. Around the same time, related work was done independently by Harder [40] and Laumon [62]. In writing this text based on a revised version of these preprints that were widely distributed in summer 1995, I ?nally did not p- sue the original plan to completely reorganize the original preprints. After the long delay, one of the reasons was that an overview of the results is now available in [115]. Instead I tried to improve the presentation modestly, in particular by adding cross-references wherever I felt this was necessary. In addition, Chaps. 11 and 12 and Sects. 5. 1, 5. 4, and 5. 5 were added; these were written in 1998. I willgivea moredetailedoverviewofthecontentofthedifferentchaptersbelow. Before that I should mention that the two main results are the proof of Ramanujan’s conjecture for Siegel modular forms of genus 2 for forms which are not cuspidal representations associated with parabolic subgroups(CAP representations), and the study of the endoscopic lift for the group GSp(4). Both topics are formulated and proved in the ?rst ?ve chapters assuming the stabilization of the trace formula. All the remaining technical results, which are necessary to obtain the stabilized trace formula, are presented in the remaining chapters. Chapter 1 gathers results on the cohomology of Siegel modular threefolds that are used in later chapters, notably in Chap. 3. At the beginning of Chap.

These notes are devoted to the study of some classical problems in the Geometry of Banach spaces. The novelty lies in the fact that their solution relies heavily on techniques coming from Descriptive Set Theory. Thecentralthemeisuniversalityproblems.Inparticular,thetextprovides an exposition of the methods developed recently in order to treat questions of the following type: (Q) LetC be a class of separable Banach spaces such that every space X in the classC has a certain property, say property (P). When can we ?nd a separable Banach space Y which has property (P) and contains an isomorphic copy of every member ofC? We will consider quite classical properties of Banach spaces, such as “- ing re?exive,” “having separable dual,” “not containing an isomorphic copy of c ,” “being non-universal,” etc. 0 It turns out that a positive answer to problem (Q), for any of the above mentioned properties, is possible if (and essentially only if) the classC is “simple.” The “simplicity” ofC is measured in set theoretic terms. Precisely, if the classC is analytic in a natural “coding” of separable Banach spaces, then we can indeed ?nd a separable space Y which is universal for the class C and satis?es the requirements imposed above.




Cyclic Coverings, Calabi-Yau Manifolds and Complex Multiplication

The main goal of this book is the construction of families of Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds with dense sets of complex multiplication fibers. The new families are determined by combining and generalizing two methods. Firstly, the method of E. Viehweg and K. Zuo, who have constructed a deformation of the Fermat quintic with a dense set of CM fibers by a tower of cyclic coverings. Using this method, new families of K3 surfaces with dense sets of CM fibers and involutions are obtained. Secondly, the construction method of the Borcea-Voisin mirror family, which in the case of the author's examples yields families of Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds with dense sets of CM fibers, is also utilized. Moreover fibers with complex multiplication of these new families are also determined. This book was written for young mathematicians, physicists and also for experts who are interested in complex multiplication and varieties with complex multiplication. The reader is introduced to generic Mumford-Tate groups and Shimura data, which are among the main tools used here. The generic Mumford-Tate groups of families of cyclic covers of the projective line are computed for a broad range of examples.

Substitution Dynamical Systems - Spectral Analysis

This volume mainly deals with the dynamics of finitely valued sequences, and more specifically, of sequences generated by substitutions and automata. Those sequences demonstrate fairly simple combinatorical and arithmetical properties and naturally appear in various domains. As the title suggests, the aim of the initial version of this book was the spectral study of the associated dynamical systems: the first chapters consisted in a detailed introduction to the mathematical notions involved, and the description of the spectral invariants followed in the closing chapters. This approach, combined with new material added to the new edition, results in a nearly self-contained book on the subject. New tools - which have also proven helpful in other contexts - had to be developed for this study.
