Meditations for the Afflicted, Sick and Dying (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Meditations for the Afflicted, Sick and Dying The Society for Promoting Christian Know ledge, pioty and Charity, under whose auspices the present volume is published, has not arm cd, in its publications, at novelty. Most of its volumes - and they have found favor in the religious community - have been selected from works of merit already in print. Nor has it confined its selection to any particular set of theologians. Its object has been a practical one, and it has not discarded a work adapted to promote piety, because it contained some views of theology not in accordance with its own. Dying Thoughts

Book Description

Excerpt from Dying Thoughts: Or Meditations on Death and Heaven The worthy author having in his Introduction given his reader an account of the rise and occasion of the following Meditations, there is scarce any thing left us to do, unless to assure the world they are really his, being left by him, at his death, transcribed, ready for the press, carefully revised, and in many places corrected by his own hand. This assurance may, perhaps, be necessary for strangers: but those who knew Mr. Crawford, especially such as had the happiness at any time to sit under his ministry, will have no occasion for our testimony. These familiar, and yet striking illustrations of divine truths, that strength of reasoning and expression, by which he in a manner forced them upon his hearers, and, above all, that easy and unaffected fervour of devotion which distinguished his public performances, show themselves in every part of this, though it is not to be imagined that all these should appear equally in all. And yet one may venture to say, that there are few productions of this sort where reason and devotion are more closely united; and even in those parts where he found it necessary to support some of his principles in a more abstracted way of reasoning than perhaps every ones capacity will easily reach the strength of, he has taken care by suitable and easy reflections to bring them down to the lowest.
