Feeling, on his death-bed, deep concern for the spiritual well-being of the congregation he was so soon to leave, he said, "I am conscious of having preached the truth to my people, though in much weakness, and I wish them to remember it when I am gone." The feeling that a short memoir should be written of his life and ministry, accompanied by as many of his sermons as could be conveniently contained in the volume, has been more and more strongly felt as time has passed on.
