Memories of Buffalo Bill (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Memories of Buffalo Bill It was more than a half century ago, May 1, 1865, to be exact. The twinge of early spring had not yet left the air, and I sat curled up in a big chair in front of the grate fire in our little home in Old Frenchtown, St. Louis. There was a reason for the fact that we lived in Frenchtown; it carried a thought of home to my father, John Frederici, who saw in it an echo of Alsace-Lorraine, where he was born, and where he lived until the call of America brought his parents to this country. Early Recollections of Buffalo

Book Description

Excerpt from Early Recollections of Buffalo: Read Before the Buffalo Historical Society, May 19, 1908 At last I was missed; my haunt discovered; a sound admonition followed, also the padlocking of the roof door. This was my first great deprivation. Years afterward I was again on the roof, but it wasn't interesting. There were houses, or something in the way. From those same garret windows (i had the attic for a play-room) I could look far up Delaware avenue, nearly to Tupper street, and see the domed roof of Doctor John son's cottage, afterward the dwelling of the Buffalo Semi nary, and which is still standing, as it was rebuilt after its fire. I stood at that garret window and saw it burn, and watched the domed metal roof fall in with a wonderful shower of colored fire and sparks. (and, excepting this one, for many years there were almost no houses on Dela ware street below Allen.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Art in Buffalo (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Art in Buffalo IF the following pages have any historic value, or are found to be of any interest to the lovers of art or to the general public, thanks are due to Mr. James N. Johnston, a friend of all the Muses, without whose encouraging importunity they probably never would have been written. True it is, that the writer has long had it in mind to leave behind him some kind of record of his familiarity with Buffalo's early art and artists; but, owing to his more urgent duties, the inception has been allowed to remain in abeyance until the more convenient season, a time which seldom comes. No one is more pain fully aware of the imperfection of the work than the writer. The principal purpose was to keep in vivid memory things concerning the early art of the city which now are fast fading into utter oblivion; but the subject grew by what it fed upon, and what was first intended to be only data for the future historian, increased till it embraced a general review of Buffalo's art up to the present day, as far as the writer's memory (in want of early authorities, if any existed) could assist him.
