No One's Story - Volume 1: Memories

Book Description

If you remember something but no one is around to see it, does it truly happen? And if memory makes up your identity, what happens when you give that identity up? That was what 'Nowun' had to determine after agreeing to be sent to another world. A piling of coincidences and misfortune, the choice of an unorthodox power. If he wanted to avoid playing on the strings of the Goddess, he would need to circumvent her powers. And to do that, he made a gamble.

Charles Conder

Book Description

A gifted artist whose personal style and unconventional life made him one of the most intriguing artists of the late 19th century is portrayed in this biography of Charles Conders. A friend of Tom Roberts and student of Frederick McCubbin, Conder was one of the few painters of the Heidelberg School of Australian Impressionists to achieve a reputation in Europe. After contributing to the famous 9 x 5 Exhibition in Melbourne in 1889, Conders traveled to Paris, where he mingled with such fin de siècle leaders as Oscar Wilde, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Aubrey Beardsley. There he readily embraced bohemia and found himself forever in debt, while he lived as though there were no tomorrow. Saved from poverty by marriage to a wealthy widow, the painter nevertheless descended into syphilitic madness and died before the age of 40.

Men and Memories

Book Description

Excerpt from Men and Memories: Personal Reminiscences In presenting this volume to the public, it is but just to the memory of the author, as well as due to many of his friends, that a word of explanation should be given of its apparent desultoriness. The original plan of "Men and Memories" was laid out in 1891, and the first article written, at my own urgent insistence. Mr. Young's personal acquaintance with eminent men, his interesting experiences and reminiscences seemed too valuable to be lost; and after much persuasion, he began the series with the article upon "Lincoln." His original scheme included "Recollections of Charles Sumner," - "Wendell Phillips," - "James G. Blaine and his Times," - longer papers upon "Horace Greeley," - "The Cary Sisters" and "Tribune Days," - "Edwin Booth and the American Stage during the past 35 years." Together with "Reminiscences of 'English Friends, '" - among whom were "Robert Browning," - "Wilkie Collins," - "George Eliot," - "William Black," - "Miss Mu-lock" (Mrs. Craik), - and "Henry Irving and His Influence upon Acting." Mr. Young's original plan was never carried out. Many duties pressed, and while he was still making notes upon those who had passed on, other friends, near at hand, were falling from the ranks.
