Mesha

Book Description

This story is about the amazing journey of an extraordinary puppy. From a pound dog shelter to a new chapter of her life with us. She was the most talented pup I have ever met in my whole life! She was gentle and never barked at any person she faced. Instead, she sniffed as her usual greeting to anyone. She could learn new stuff within a day. She played soccer with a basketball by herself and caught a baby chick robin and then let it go. She did all kinds of tricks that made us laugh and brighten our day. One of her favorite games was to have someone fly a Frisbee. Mesha would then catch up the Frisbee and let it bounce onto her nose and then catch it again. She was our clown in her own ways. She was the best comforter for my daughteraEUR(tm)s heartaches and/or bad days throughout her entire teenage life to adulthood, and also to us during my father-in-lawaEUR(tm)s passing. She was the best scarecrow to scare the birds out from my garden. Every person she met would love her instantly. She was full of love in her life. She was the most loving creature of God.

Sugar Run

Book Description

“A shining debut, with a heady admixture of explosive plot and taut, burnished prose. This is a book that loves its wounded characters and troubled places, and in so deeply loving, it finds a terrible truth and beauty where other writers wouldn't have found the courage to look . . . Mesha Maren writes like a force of nature.” —Lauren Groff, author of Fates and Furies On the far side the view was nothing but ridgelines, the craggy silhouettes rising up against the night sky like the body of some dormant god. Jodi felt her breath go tight in her chest. This road went only one way, it seemed, in under the mountains until you were circled. In 1989, Jodi McCarty is seventeen years old when she’s sentenced to life in prison for manslaughter. She’s released eighteen years later and finds herself at a Greyhound bus stop, reeling from the shock of unexpected freedom. Not yet able to return to her lost home in the Appalachian mountains, she goes searching for someone she left behind, but on the way, she meets and falls in love with Miranda, a troubled young mother. Together, they try to make a fresh start, but is that even possible in a town that refuses to change? Set within the charged insularity of rural West Virginia, Sugar Run is a searing and gritty debut about making a run for another life.

"I Undertook Great Works"

Book Description

Traditionally, scholars study ancient Near Eastern royal inscriptions to reconstruct the events they narrate. In recent decades, however, a new approach has analyzed these inscriptions as products of royal ideology and has delineated the way that ideology has shaped their narration of historical events. This ideologically-sensitive approach has focused on kings' accounts of their military campaigns. This study applies this approach to the narration of royal domestic achievements, first in the Neo-Assyrian inscriptional tradition, but especially in nine West Semitic inscriptions from the 10th to 7th centuries B.C.E. and describes how these accounts also function as the products of royal ideology.

The Old Testament Between Theology and History

Book Description

From its inception at the time of the Enlightenment until the mid-twentieth century, the historical-critical method constituted the dominant paradigm in Old Testament studies. In this magisterial overview, Niels Peter Lemche surveys the development of the historical-critical method and the way it changed the scholarly perception of the Old Testament. In part 1 he describes the rise and influence of historical-critical approaches, while in part 2 he traces their decline and fall. Then, in part 3, he discusses the identity of the authors of the Old Testament, based on the content of the literature they wrote, demonstrating that the collapse of history does not preclude critical study. Part 4 investigates the theological consequences of this collapse and surveys Old Testament and biblical theology in its various manifestations in the twentieth century. An appendix includes a history of Palestine from the Stone Age to modern times, constructed without recourse to the Old Testament.

Together they provide an overview of the current state of affairs in the subject.
