Microbicides in Coatings

Book Description

All about biocides for coatings: When it comes to protecting coatings, it is essential to strike the right balance between controlling germs in order to avoid economic damage on the one hand and tolerating microbial life where it is necessary and useful on the other. The new book from Frank Sauer provides a comprehensive overview of the working mechanisms and possible applications of microbicides for coatings - invaluable for formulators and technicians as well as for business people with a basic knowledge of chemistry and biology.

Directory of Microbicides for the Protection of Materials

Book Description

This two-part book combines the insights of world experts on Microbicides with detailed a detailed inventory of Microbicide Data. The combination of the two parts in one book is unique, and has produced the most authoritative information in the field.

Microbicides for the Protection of Materials

Book Description

This book is chiefly intended for those who are using microbicides for the protection of materials. Another purpose is to inform teachers and students working on biodeterioration and to show today's technical standard to those engaged in R&D activities in the microbicide field. When trying to classify, or to subclassify, material-protecting microbicides according to their mode of action, e.g. as membrane-active and electrophilic active ingredients, it turned out that a clear assignment was not always possible. For that reason the author has resorted to chemistry's principle of classifying according to groups of substances (e.g. alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, acids, esters, amides, etc.), thus providing the first necessary information about the micro bicides' properties. The description of the various groups of substances includes, whenever possible, an outline of the mode and mechanism of action of the active ingredients involved. The effective use of microbicides presupposes knowledge of their character istics. That is why the microbicides' chemico-physical properties, their toxicity, ecotoxicity, effectiveness, and effective spectrum are described in greater detail. As mentioned before, the characteristics of microbicides play an important role. They have to be suited to the intended application to avoid detrimental effects on the properties and the quality of the material to be protected; also production processes in which microbicides are used to avoid disturbances by microbial action must not be disturbed by the presence of those microbicides.

Drug Delivery and Development of Anti-HIV Microbicides

Book Description

The worldwide impact of HIV/AIDS is well recognized. This book provides for the first time a thorough and critical overview of current aspects, recent developments, and trends in the formulation and drug delivery concerning anti-HIV microbicides by leading scientists in the field. Additionally, pertinent regulatory aspects and socioeconomical issues related to the subject are discussed. In the absence of a cure, prophylaxis represents a cornerstone in the battle against infection. One promising strategy comprises the use around the time of sexual intercourse of vaginal/rectal products containing antiviral compounds, termed microbicides. It is now recognized that specific development of drug dosage forms and/or drug delivery systems is an indispensable aspect for the success of microbicides. Different groups strived over the last decade to optimize the biophysical and technological performance of traditional dosage forms (gels, tablets, and suppositories) to fulfill the specificities of microbicides use, without neglecting users’ preferences and affordability issues. Moreover, new formulation approaches, such as vaginal rings and films, nanotechnology-based systems, stimuli-sensitive formulations, targeted drug delivery systems, among others have been proposed and are currently undergoing pre-clinical or even clinical testing.

Additives for Coatings

Book Description

No doubt: A perfect coating has to look brilliant! But other properties of coatings are also most important. Coatings have to be durable, tough and easily applicable. Additives are the key to success in achieving these characteristics, even though the amounts used in coating formulations are small. It is not trivial at all to select the best additives. In practice, many series of tests are often necessary, and the results do not explain, why a certain additive improves the quality of a coating and another one impairs the coating. This book is dedicated to developers and applicants of coatings working in research or production, and it is aimed at providing a manual for their daily work. It will answer the following questions: How do the most important groups of additives act? Which effects can be be achieved by their addition? Scientific theories are linked to practical applications. Emphasis is put on the optical aspects that are most important for the applications in practice. This book is a milestone in quality assurance in the complete field of coatings!

Handbook Of Coating Additives

Book Description

This volume compiles a wealth of information on the composition, properties, utilization, and performance of major classes of additives while alerting formulators to potentially damaging interactions and challenges in the selection and testing of these materials. Completely revised and updated, the Handbook of Coatings Additives, Second Edition offers practical knowledge on the industry's most widely used compounds to accelerate and refine laboratory procedures, meet regulatory standards, and avoid hazards in the formulation of coatings additives. It is an ideal guide to making informed decisions in the development and design of effective coatings systems.
