City Directory, 1953-1954, Vol. 9: Containing an Alphabetical Directory of Business Concerns and Private Citizens, Occupants of Office Buildings and Other Business Places Including a Complete Street and Avenue Guide, Buyers Guide, Numerical Telephone Directory Banking facilities for the city and surrounding trading area are provided through three chartered banks, all members of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. There are also three strong building and loan associations, all of which are members of the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation. Educational institutions in the city include five elementary and three high schools, all operating for a full nine months term with the high schools providing twelfth grade work. Both of the senior high schools are accredited. During the 1952-1953 term there were 86 white and 22 colored teachers employed in the city system and a total of 3300 pupils enrolled.
