To be useful to beginners, it must be little else than a compilation from more comprehensive books, and the compiler can only show his judgment in the careful selection of authentic originals. Such have constantly been had recourse to in preparing the following pages. To render such a work entertaining as well as instructive, all rigid arrangement must be renounced; and _it will be found that the present one is neither chemical, mineralogical, commercial, nor historical, but as much of all these as was consistent with the above-mentioned object. With the same view, many descriptions have been introduced which would not properly come under any of these heads of division.
