Missing You: A Collection Of Short Poems

Book Description

MISSING YOU is the debut collection of haiku, senryu, tanka and haibun by Willie R. Bongcaron, a proficient haiku poet from the Philippines who is published widely. These poems mostly, if not all, follow the free modern haiku/senryu form; and not following the traditional 5-7-5 format. The author strives to capture in short poetic bursts or haiku moments special events in his life; with the end view of inspiring in the reader the drive to weave a story or stories all the latter's own based on the author's prodding. Intended for all lovers of Japanese short poetry forms in the world, this labor of love offers glimpses of life's intricacies, mundane or otherwise.

Life of the Party

Book Description

A dazzling debut collection of raw and explosive poems about growing up in a sexist, sensationalized world, from a thrilling new feminist voice. i’m a good girl, bad girl, dream girl, sad girl girl next door sunbathing in the driveway i wanna be them all at once, i wanna be all the girls I’ve ever loved —from “Girl” Lauded for the power of her writing and having attracted an online fan base of millions for her extraordinary spoken-word performances, Olivia Gatwood now weaves together her own coming-of-age with an investigation into our culture’s romanticization of violence against women. At times blistering and riotous, at times soulful and exuberant, Life of the Party explores the boundary between what is real and what is imagined in a life saturated with fear. Gatwood asks, How does a girl grow into a woman in a world racked by violence? Where is the line between perpetrator and victim? In precise, searing language, she illustrates how what happens to our bodies can make us who we are. Praise for Life of the Party “Delicately devastating, this book will make us all ‘feel less alone in the dark.’ ”—Miel Bredouw, writer and comedian, Punch Up the Jam “Gatwood writes about the women who were forgotten and the men who got off too easy with an effortlessness and empathy and anger that yanked every emotion on the spectrum out of me. Imagine, we get to live in the age of Olivia Gatwood. Goddamn.”—Jamie Loftus, writer and comedian, Boss Whom Is Girl and The Bechdel Cast “I’ve read every poem in Life of the Party. I’ve read each of them more than once. In some parts of the book the spine is already breaking because I’ve spent so much time poring over it and losing hours in this world Olivia Gatwood has partly created, but partly just invited the reader to enter on their own, caution signs be damned. This book is enlightening, inspiring, igniting, and f***ing scary. I loved every word on every page with a ferocity that frightened me.”—Madeline Brewer, actress, The Handmaid’s Tale, Orange Is the New Black, and Cam

" Defiance sprang up in me. A shadow flickered across her face. Then she changed her tone to a menacingly sweet one. A chill crept down my spine. " Refuse? There's no such word in this house. Ah Lek! " A burly man entered in response to her call, grinning evilly. " Ah Lek deals with any naughty girl who refuses. Ah Lek ." Ah Lek moved towards me silently. There was a cigarette dangling between his fingers. A gleam of pleasure lighted up his face as he yanked up my right leg. I was shocked beyond words. He threw my shoe across the room and pressed the burning end of the cigarette against the sole of my foot. I screamed as pain shot through me. It was excruciating. " Alright, Ah Lek. You may go. " I whimpered at the burning pain in my foot. All defiance died and I slumped in defeat as Ma Chieh's cold voice rang out. " I'm sure you will be more discreet. Remember, the next time will be worse. Put this on your foot and change into this. " She locked the door behind her and left me to my despair. I put the salve on my sole. It relieved the pain. Then I changed into the silk kimono, a lovely pink with cherry blossoms. A sense of utter helplessness overcame me. Oh God! Was this really happening to me? I pinched myself. It hurt. There was nothing I could do except wait for this mysterious visitor. Perhaps he could even help me out of this. It was no use crying. The hours ticked endlessly by and the day turned into night. I sat on the bed, all keyed up. Terror and despair engulfed me as I waited for whatever was to come. At last footsteps echoed in the corridor. Find out what happens to Su who has been sold by her aunt's son upon her death.
