The Poetry of Céline Arnauld


Book Description

The poet Céline Arnauld (1885-1952) was at the heart of Paris Dada. Her experimental texts appeared in the most prominent avant-garde journals and she published almost a dozen books. Yet Arnauld predicted as early as 1924 that she would be written out of history. Isolated by personal loss and financially insecure, she took her own life in 1952. Her story is one of an individual with an elusive identity -- she was a Jewish émigré, born Carolina Goldstein in Romania -- who left behind a body of work rich in innovation. In this study, Ruth Hemus conveys the pleasure of discovering this neglected figure and her inventive writing. Charting one woman's navigation of the avant-garde over a thirty-year period (1918-1948), she sets out Arnauld's quest for an autonomous poetry that she herself called 'ultra-modern.' Ruth Hemus is a Reader in French and Visual Arts at Royal Holloway University.




The Annotated Bakhtin Bibliography

This is the first in a new series entitled MHRA Bibliographies. The Annotated Bakhtin Bibliography draws its material from, and is intended as a companion to, the on-line Analytical Database of Work by and about the Bakhtin Circle: maintained by the Bakhtin Centre at the University of Sheffield, this is the most extensive electronic collection of bibliographical and analytical data relating to the Russian philosopher and cultural theorist Mikhail Bakhtin and the members of the Bakhtin Circle (principally Mariia Iudina, Matvei Kagan, Pavel Medvedev, Lev Pumpianskii, Ivan Sollertinskii and Valentin Voloshinov). The work of Bakhtin and the Bakhtin Circle has had enormous international impact across a range of disciplines, including literary and cultural theory, philosophy, history, anthropology, linguistics and psychology. The Annotated Bakhtin Bibliography will provide scholars and students of Bakhtin with easy access to detailed information on research undertaken throughout the world in these and other fields. The text of The Annotated Bakhtin Bibliography is in two parts. The first part comprises extensive bibliographical details of almost three hundred primary works (including information about translations and reprints). The second consists of almost one thousand entries containing analytical and annotated information about secondary literature dealing with Bakhtin and the Bakhtin Circle in over twenty languages, allowing the principal trends in the development of Bakhtin studies to be discerned and traced. Consultation of the bibliography is facilitated by comprehensive name, title and subject indexes.




The Philomena of Chrétien the Jew: The Semiotics of Evil

Ovid's gruesome tale of rape, mutilation, and revenge, transformed into Philomena and retold in French octosyllables, found its way into the fourteenth century Ovide moralisé with a signature at its mid-point: Crestiens li gois, the great twelfth century romancer's early avatar. Writing two generations after the Jewish massacres of the First Crusade, Christian the Goy playfully alludes to his hybrid status as a forced convert, even as he hides his identity in order to invent - like Philomena herself - new signs, a new language to speak the unspeakable and construct a fictional universe whose universalist values offer a critique of contemporary society. Such is Peter Haidu's conjecture and argument, combining philology, history and theory to offer a political interpretation and close reading of how a young poet transposed his horror at the holocaust of 1096. Left unpublished at his death, this summa of Peter Haidu's long and distinguished career as medievalist, literary theorist, historian, and master interpreter of Chrétien de Troyes, has been edited by Matilda Tomaryn Bruckner, Professor emerita of French (Boston College).

The Language of Disease


Book Description

While the 'venereal peril' of nineteenth-century France was responsible for thousands of deaths, much attention has focused on the range of social anxieties with which it was associated, including degeneracy, depopulation, state surveillance and public morality. In this interdisciplinary study, Steven Wilson redirects attention onto the body as locus of syphilis. Combining a critical medical humanities approach with close readings of medical and literary texts, Wilson explores the ways in which canonical and non-canonical writers of the time found a language to represent the diseased body. Drawing on scholarship from gender studies, theology, pain studies and word/image relations, this engaging study investigates what the language used in nineteenth-century French literature tells us not only about the pathological function and lived experience of syphilis, but about the role played by literature in representing disease.
