More Thoughts on the War (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from More Thoughts on the War It matters not whether these shortcomings are less or greater one year than another. The desire of men's hearts does not wait upon results, and they do not love less the peace that is not because of the war that is. Rather they are more passionately aware of what that peace might be; and if in. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Thoughts on the War (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Thoughts on the War No: we cannot hate or blame the people in general. And certainly not the individual Germans whom we know. I have just by me a letter from young Fritz Hackmann, who was in Oxford last term and brought me an introduction from a Greek scholar in Berlin a charming letter, full of gratitude for the very small friendlinesses I had been able to show him. I remember his sunny smile and his bow with a click of the heels. He is now fighting us. And there is Paul Maass, too, a young Doctor of Philosophy, recently married. He sent me a short time back the photograph of his baby, Ulf and we exchanged small jokes about Ulf's look of wisdom and his knowledge of Greek and his imperious habits. And now of course Maass is with his regiment, and we shall do our best to kill him, and after that to starve Ulf and Ulf's mother. It is well for us to remember what war means when reduced to terms of private human life. Doubtless we have most of us met disagreeable Germans and been angry with them; but I doubt if we ever wanted to cut their throats or blow them to pieces with lyddite. And many thousands of us have German friends, or have come across good straight Germans in business, or have carried on smiling and incompetent conversa tions with kindly German peasants on walking tours. We must remember such things as these, and not hate the Germans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Frenchman's Thoughts on the War (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Frenchman's Thoughts on the War It cannot be too often repeated: the real beauty of our efforts in the present conflict is that they constitute a revolt of the human conscience against Germanism. I say the human conscience: not the conscience of this or that people, for in course of time, not among the Allies only, but throughout the whole world, every conscience which has not abdicated its rights, every conscience which is not the prisoner of material interests, or of prejudices which we will not examine, will be on our side. We may be calm and patient. If Germany could only discern the spiritual factors in the lives of other peoples she would perceive the immense wave of indignation which is rising against her in certain countries which are politically neutral, but as determined as ourselves to become the implacable enemies of Germanism. The German soldier is not merely the invader who desires to destroy our lives, our goods, our country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Some Neglected Aspects of War (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Some Neglected Aspects of War The cause of Universal Peace, upon which so much of the world's attention has been fixed this summer by the Hague Conference, can progress surely to success only upon the same conditions by which any other movement for good reaches its goal. It will not be advanced, but retarded, by neglecting diligently and calmly to consider facts, to look them straight in the face; to see things as they are, and not merely as one would wish to see them now, or as it is possible that our descendants may be privileged to see in a future happier age. Among many perversions of thought and resultant exaggerations of statement, by the unconditional advocates of Arbitration, there is one which underlies all others. A Frenchwoman's Notes on the War (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Frenchwoman's Notes on the War Also - let it be remarked - we, who are the spectators of the greatest war that history has ever known, possess but incom plete War news, greatly censored. The bare official information yielded to us day by day consists of separate items of news from our immense battlefield, 500 miles long, and these - as presented to us - appear to be independent of one another, having no apparent cohesion or interdetermination between them. It is only occasionally indeed, very rarely - that some sentence in a communique' reveals to us, in a flash, some general point of view. Turkey and the War (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Turkey and the War This little book is an attempt to define the real aims of the present war. That is to say, we presume, that there may be a difference between what people, even people in leading positions, suppose to be the aim of the war, and What it really is. The current formulas on this subject circulated in this country may prove, on more atten tive analysis, to reflect popular feelings rather than immanent realities of the universal Situation. Mr. Asquith's well known statement, twice repeated in 1914. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
